Competitive shooting, boxing, drugs, harm reduction, and life. It's all about mindsets and shifts, focus, precision, and respect. Navigating a shared context with the flexibility to pivot when needed -- keeping connection and purpose.
Insights shared, energy sparked, laughs even in tough moments—DPRI moving drug policy past empty rhetoric and into real reform for real lives.

This brings to mind how a parallel “barrier” to advocacy work around drugs and drug policy reform. Even though we talk a lot about intersectionality, the work tends to stay siloed and within bubbles. Time for some constructive disruption… :)
Expert's Dilemma: the more specialized you become, the less open you are to creative solutions from other fields. But the more you explore other fields, the more you risk losing credibility in your home field.
Interdisciplinary work is still not really embraced by academia.

Watched #GreenBonesMovie at #MMFF2024. Powerful movie. Begs the question(s)—How deeply entrenched are these abuses in our penal system? What structures allow them to continue unchecked? And what is it about us as Filipinos and as a culture that lets these injustices not only persist but feel normal?

Mindfulness: it isn’t just about being present— it’s about what that presence brings. In competitive shooting, it’s hitting every mark w/ speed & accuracy. In boxing, it’s power & focus. In advocacy, it’s real connection and understanding that foster respect and lead to meaningful, shared progress.

Years in high-level competitive shooting taught me: success comes from focusing on each moment, knowing every step builds the goal. This mindset has been crucial in drug reform work—equitable, kind, well-regulated policies come from steady progress, each moment and encounter vital to lasting change.

ME: [extremely burnt out] I need to take the day off to relax

ALSO ME: I wonder if there is a way that I could relax that would be more productive

Thankful for the report. In the Philippines, aid for “treatment,” “community-based rehab programs” in reality aided forced treatment, punitive measures, surveillance drug testing, placing people on drug lists -making them easy targets for rights violations. Aid institutionalizing systemic harm.
The DEA has 93 offices in 69 countries.

“US aid is tied to following prohibitionist & punitive approaches ... You see aid $ being spent on things like stipends for DEA officers” - Claire Provost at @drugpolicy.org / @harmreductionintl.bsky.social report launch.

Word of the day is a favourite, from old Scots.

To ‘tartle’ is to hesitate while introducing someone because you have completely forgotten their name.

Mindsets aren’t an either/or. We all hold multiple mindsets, shaped by our contexts, experiences, and assumptions—a fascinating part of being human. In drug policy reform and harm reduction, uncovering these ‘hidden layers’ and knowing which to engage with helps us truly connect and inspire change.

My daughter Mikli just started a new podcast, @headtimestories.pod, exploring how people think with the question:“What’s it like in your brain when…?” Her natural story-telling and curiosity draws you right in, making for such an interesting listen. Maybe, you’d enjoy it, too!:)

Starting a new page feels like opening a brand-new notebook— overthinking the first post. But then the excitement of connecting and discovering takes over. Love exploring narratives, unpacking ideas, connecting dots— how we think, shape change, and live better together. Eager to see what unfolds…!
