The Tyrant of the Bar: The 1902 Glasgow Licensing Courts and the Barmaid Question

In 1902 Glasgow tried to prohibit barmaids. Read about the panic behind it, the legal realities and the working class women affected.

Regarding yesterday, if you want to see a lot of neurodivergent women then go to a Fibre Arts Fair.

A hobby that you can do on your own in the house, that has lots of accessories to collect, endless variation and a community that will simultaneously come together and start a fight in an empty room

Trying to find a pattern for fingerless gloves with actual fingers and not ones that stop at the knuckle.

I understand the other one is easier but I use a mobility electric wheelchair and the wind goes right up those.

@k8lister.bsky.social I assume your next column will be a massive burning magnesium light about this
Megyn Kelly: "I know somebody very close to this case…Jeffrey Epstein, in this person's view, was not a pedophile…He was into the barely legal type, like he liked 15 year old girls…He wasn't into like 8 year olds…There's a difference between a 15 year old and a 5 year old."

Woke up this morning with the stunning thought that Ireland let's you use your library card to borrow from anywhere in the country. So I went to Dublin Central Library. Now I have books and am in a Wetherspoons with a Spice Bag and a gin

Seeing videos online of people only doing nice stuff for people less well off because they're filming themselves doing nice stuff for people less well off so they can post monetised videos of themselves online doing nice stuff for people less well off.

The Saudi regime has executed 322 people this year. Some were child defendants, most were alleged drug offenders, more than half were foreign nationals.

This excellent Guardian article, reported with Reprieve's help, gives voice to some of the victims of this unfathomably cruel execution spree.

As we approach Black Friday can I mention that *now* is the time that TV streamers deep discount membership to attract people for Christmas.

Usually it's for new subscribers only but that's what a burner email is for.

Managed to do an online delivery because I'm no longer in a place which is so rural that they can't go or so poor that they won't go.

Wave of the future. I bought a load of heavy stuff and @archivedelver.bsky.social need never have to be taken around the supermarket like a petulant 5 year old again

As BBC DG, I will

1. Give money to BBC4 for more documentaries
2. Revive Face The Music and have a R3 presenter as host
3. Bring back Saturday morning telly with new music
4. Commission several new sketch shows and sitcoms
5. Get big US TV shows two years late and put them on at 6pm on BBC2
