A famine isn't when some people need food btw. It's when they need weeks of medical attention to even handle normal food again.

One of my bigger frustrations from this school year: the false dichotomy too many buy into that you can EITHER have positive rapport and relationships in the classroom OR rigorous, academic challenge.

Both/and. Both/and. Both/and.

Mathematics: Sudoku as a Graph

Sudoku cells are like dots, and the rules are like lines connecting them, showing which cells can't share numbers. This allows mathematicians to use graph theory to analyze and solve the puzzle.

These mitten hidato puzzles were a special request from a teacher looking for a winter-themed logic puzzle. I figure they are perfect for this bout of cold weather we are experiencing!

We possess the technology to create products that nearly never break. We were doing it in the 70's & 80's.

Then came 'planned obsolescence' - intentionally designing products to become obsolete or break quickly within a set time frame.

This is that- but in reverse.

I just found out that around 20% of the neanderthal genome still exists today in living people!!

No individual person has more than 3 or 4% but we don't all have the same bits. If you add up all the bits we've found, about a fifth of the Neanderthal genome is still present on earth today.

100% agree with this. Theoretically, I have about 70 minutes per day to grade papers, write lessons, contact parents, make collagues, manage online materials, and collaborate with collagues. That's 2 minutes per student. Our school system is designed to fail.
Other "high performing" countries have figured out that decreasing class load gives more opportunities to get that PD, discuss good practices, and visit each other.

In the US, schools want to do that *while* having only one lunch and one prep period.

(Quotes because I'm still skeptical ...)
