That means it’s easier to give advice when you don’t pay the consequences of your advice.
So if you want to make a difference in sustainability you don’t need to be an “expert” on climate and biodiversity sciences and targets. It’s the lived experience that will really be invaluable.

This is why I am only driven by impact, objective alignment and any other tactic that will optimise their time.

We have a saying in French: “les conseilleurs ne sont pas les payeurs”. That roughly translates as “the advisors are not the payers”.

When it comes to Sustainability, it is the same principle. Because I have had Profit & Loss responsibilities, I understand the pressure that P&L owners go through. I know that their time is precious and that they will only have a very small portion of it to dedicate to my requests.

I know of a successful woman who thought she shouldn’t advise or mentor young women because she didn’t have children. In her mind, that somehow diminished her achievements and meant she wasn’t an example to follow. I’m sure no childless man ever thinks this way!

I am not the only one who made it to the top the hard way, but not many of us speak about it. Sometimes because of the lack of time, or because we don’t realise how special the achievements were, or even worse, because we think we are not perfect enough as a woman to be allowed to talk.

Being a woman who managed to break the glass ceiling in a male dominated industry, I understand the challenges met every step of the way. Some strategies that will look wonderful on paper, made by experts who know their topic well, might encounter little real life obstacles that will derail it

Let’s take the example of DEI. We can track the trends of the number of women in a certain industry and give targets, but are we sure we understand enough what is happening on the ground to have the right strategy in place?

What is missing are people who know both worlds - business and sustainability - and can make the connection between them. Someone who speaks the expert language enough to understand what needs to be done, while understanding enough of the business people's challenges to get it done.

And do you know what else? I don’t want to be a “sustainability expert”
Why?
Because there are many Sustainability experts in companies, doing a wonderful job. There are also many business people, who have navigated through many functions, to the point of becoming a Jack or Jane of all trades.
