On Saturday, about 120 people in Bellingham gathered supplies for the Bellingham Food Bank by bicycle during a Cranksgiving event. Each rider had to shop in at least four grocery stores. Organizers with Walk and Roll Bellingham said $7,800 in goods were collected after tallying receipts.

Wrapped #weekwithoutdriving by making a Lowe’s, grocery and Costco run on our e-bikes in a single loop. The views along bike routes can often beat the same route by car.

Great talk from @spottnik.bsky.social last night to kick off the #weekwithoutDriving. He set a high bar by managing the @seattledot.bsky.social without a personal or company vehicle. Enjoyed the management takeaways from his talk beyond the transportation ones.

Had a great time last night showing folks how easy it is to bike to our local airport. I even toted a gravel bike in a travel bag to show you can tote a bike for your destination. The airport plans to add bike lockers, making this a more palatable trip.

How to draw in cyclists? Give them a safe space to ride. Hundreds descended on the closed section of Highway 20 through North Cascades National Park on Sunday to take in the up to 50 mile out and back to where snow clearing stopped ahead of the road’s reopening.

Made use of new bike boxes for the second time this week in Bellingham. What a great way to store your gear while on errands. Left our bags and jackets while going to see Alton Brown.

Three years ago this week, bananas began appearing in strange places in my neighborhood, one a day. They were on signs, fence posts and even the spots I captured here. Just as quickly as the Bananagram mystery began, it quieted as if the fruit had never flourished. People still talk about it today.

We got the @nppa.org Bluesky account paired with the domain today. Nice to see that clean handle. Give them a follow to support visual journalists.

Tried something new for a trip last week and biked just a few miles to the airport, leaving our bikes locked outside for the duration of the trip. It was great hopping right on when we returned. If they add bike lockers instead of a single small rack, this could be a normal option for travelers.

If he fits, he sits. Klaus may be twice the size of this bed but not sure he’ll give it up.

Had a hard reminder to take freezing temps seriously last night, even when it has been dry for a week. I took a downhill turn at summer speeds on my bicycle and lost traction, sliding across the lane. My helmet and jacket took the brunt of it. Really sore shoulder and otherwise fine.

Visual journalists covering the Los Angeles fires for @apnews.com shared thoughts on how they approached their work. Particularly agreed with these words by Nic Coury but all are worth a read. apnews.com/article/cali...

After a long day of editing fire and memorial photos, I pulled away mentally by making bread. First time, nice way to take myself offline.

I love checking out local bookstores when I travel. The Haunted Bookshop in Sidney, B.C., provided plenty of ghosts in the form of antique books. Great shop.

Whoever does the arcade curation for @bcferries.bsky.social really knocks it out of the park.

We faded to black with the bell spinning, uncertain which reality we were in.

Enjoyed watching Polar Express as a horror film tonight. Getting heavy Bioshock vibes from the tinny 1950s Christmas music echoing through the halls.

It’s cookie season. Prepping for a gathering with one of my standbys. Spice cookies with bourbon vanilla frosting.

My sister just gave me the annual update that cordyceps Santa lives on at our parents’ house. May he spread spores and winter cheer all season.

Just hit 500 miles on the e-bike commuting around town. Last night I used it to pick up some new Christmas lights.

Groceries by e-bike tonight. Just above 40 degrees but felt great. Lots of lights, including pedal lights that I have fallen in love with, to keep ourselves visible.

Tried something new this year. We got a Christmas tree permit for a National Forest and drove up into the mountains on Thanksgiving. Found our champion under a fallen branch. The program helps the forest by easing tree crowding.
