I’ll be chatting about oysters today at #Evol2025! 🦪 Drop by the Ecological Genetics III session in Olympia 2 at 3:00 pm to hear about some unexpected and exciting genetic results.

Yesterday I met with PA Senator Dave McCormick and the offices of Rep. Scott Perry and @fetterman.senate.gov to discuss the importance of federal funding for biological research with at least $9.9 billion for @NSF in FY2026. @aibsbiology.bsky.social #AIBSCVD2025

Curious about grad school in #ecology 🧪 or #marinescience 🦑? Apply for BEACHES! I’ve been a mentor in this program for 3 years, and I’ve personally seen it positively impact academic trajectories. All expenses covered, hosted at the @northeasternmes.bsky.social Marine Science Center. Share widely! 🌊

With some quick math, I also found that ~440k people in PA are employed in "knowledge and technology-intensive" industries (aka high investment in research). These are the types of facts that will help you convey the importance of your message when in communication with congressional reps.

For instance, I'm a registered voter in Pennsylvania. On my fact sheet, I can see that NSF funding is responsible for investing 13.5 million into the PA economy and making PA the 5th best state in the nation for research & development performance.

I recently presented on the range-wide #popgen structure of the eastern oyster at the @noaa.gov Milford Aquaculture Seminar. It was my first time attending, and it was great to see the interest in applying genetics to improve aquaculture outcomes! 🦪🧬

I had a fantastic time presenting on a forthcoming manuscript at Boston University with co-author @allydefduf.bsky.social last week! Thank you to BU and @daviesswphd.bsky.social for the invite. Stay tuned for our ✨pre-print✨, which will be available soon!! #QueerInSTEM

one of my first ever science twitter posts was for #MolluscMonday. i’m excited for my first one here!

I study eastern oysters 🦪 and just visited a long-term aquaculture site. we flipped surface bags to prevent shell growth into the mesh and collected samples to assess health.

Just wrapped up another great visit to VIMS making progress on my historic DNA project! 🧬🧪🦪 #evolution #adna

After proof-of-concept data collection last year, I received the Melbourne R. Carriker award from the National Shellfisheries Association to fund the next step of the project!

Making great progress on our fieldwork at VIMS this week! We are counting thousands of oysters in an ongoing common garden experiment in the @drk-lo.bsky.social lab 🧪🦑🦪

We also got some cool shots of the polydora worms tunneling in shells! #popgen

Howdy all! I’m Madeline (they/them), PhD candidate studying #popgen and disease ecology of eastern oysters 🦪 🧬🧪

Reintroducing myself as I’ll be more active here from now on! I’m passionate about #scicomm and being ✨#QueerInSTEM✨and post about both. 🏳️‍🌈

I got the oysters in the back 🤠🦪🚜

Almost finished monitoring oysters at VIMS with the best field work partners! @camillerums.bsky.social @zeasegnitz.bsky.social 🦑🧪🌊

The field work at VIMS continues, and so far we’ve counted >18k juvenile oysters for an ongoing common garden fitness experiment in the Chesapeake. Approx. 55k more oysters to go! 🦪

More & more DNA extractions at VIMS, with good results coming in! Plus some cool sights at the lab. 🌊

Its day 3 at VIMS! I’m here with a Lerner-Gray research grant from the AMNH to study the temporal genomics of eastern oysters in the Chesapeake Bay. So far I’ve learned a lot about histology and shellfish disease ecology. The archived collections that I’m using here are SO cool! Stay tuned 🦑🧬🖥️

Just arrived (after a looong drive from Boston) to VIMS on the beautiful Chesapeake. I’m stoked to be here for a month of lab and field work! 🦪🌊 One of my main goals here is to assess feasibility of genomic sequencing on preserved oyster tissues … fingers crossed for good results!
