We'll meet the developers of emerging technologies intended to give us complete control of the sounds around us. The dream of vanquishing noise is as old as antiquity--but what would it mean to actually succeed?

@mactra.bsky.social From white noise apps and noise-cancelling headphones to tinnitus and sound therapy, Mack helped me understand the complex relationship between media, technology, and the human need to tune in (or out).

I am listening to the inspiring podcast with @eryk.bsky.social about the age of noise (or rather diffusion?).
My podcast about #sound + #audio, Phantom Power, recently dropped an excellent interview with @eryk.bsky.social on #AI in art, music, and culture. In the pod app of your choice or on YouTube.

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.
I'm sure many have said this before but I'm reading a student-facing document about how students might use AI in the classroom (if allowed) and one of the recs is: use AI to make an outline of your reading! But ISN'T MAKING THE OUTLINE how one actually learns?

Currently writing a script for the forthcoming podcast How to Listen.

In this scene, Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, author of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, describes "noise" as objective and "sound" as intersubjective.

I went clubbing in New Orleans with Allen Ginsberg once in 1988. Producer Mark Bingham drove. I was just a kid who'd asked Ginsberg to sign my LP of HOWL at a reading.

He later invited me back to his hotel but I politely declined.
I was 18, he was 62.
Different times!
Ginsberg looked into my eyes as we shook hands.

"Haven't we met before?" he asked.

"Well, yes, you did come to my school once," I replied awkwardly."

He shook his head.

Maybe, I thought, he meant in a past life. Maybe I was and old friend. Kerouac reincarnated.

No.

He was just hitting on me.
