Gavin as ever here asks some searching questions about the resurrection of ‘hotspots’ policing and targeted police tactics…are you better served focusing on places & spaces…or the faces that cause or commit most crime or pose the most risks
Something I've been reflecting on recently: I worry that an emphasis on places (e.g. hotspot policing) over people (those causing the greatest harm) may be a driver of disproportionality and especially 'false positive' contact between policing and the public.

Today the figures for police service strength were released in England & Wales

First drop in numbers for 6 years…

4,668 officers voluntarily resigned…higher than retirements for the 3rd year running

This means 30,272 officers have left policing in the last 10 years

My report "Lessons for Prevent" will be published on Wednesday, probably late morning. My terms of reference ask me to look at the Prevent histories of the killers of Sir David Amess and the Southport girls, and draw any conclusions for the future of Prevent. www.gov.uk/government/p...

Today is the 10th anniversary of something that’s defined my life ever since…on a hot summer evening not unlike today I developed chest pains and went into a coma like state for several minutes…I’d had a heart attack..I was only 41…the same age as my grandfather when he had one and never got to know

Dear #criminology on Bluesky…if anybody has any research projects or journal articles & books/chapters on the go that needs some research assistance or knows of anyone who does…even if it’s a small amount I’m looking for any opportunities at present in the area of policing/LE or extremism & CT

Can anyone point me to any good examples of writing on equality vs equity as they relate to policing, ideally with specific reference to the public sector equality duty in the Equality Act 2010?

After working really hard to get myself educated later in life and spent a fortune out of my own pocket to do that I’ve come to the conclusion that having an ‘education’ gets you nowhere…even experience seems to count for nothing much now as well…what’s the point anymore?

Job hunting is so damn tough these days…experience in policing x 2 including specialising in counter-terrorism…community safety…university lecturing in criminology…masters degree…it’s soul destroying…aim too high & you don’t have the essentials…too low & it’s pointless…even hope is now diminishing

55,000 a day…almost 400,000 a week…not far off 20 million a year at these rates…that’s not sustainable as a business model…crime really does seem to be paying these days…how can this really be tackled? My local supermarket has all its spirits locked behind glass doors now…Argos style shopping!

I’m looking for a job…I can’t continue with the ‘casual worker’ status I’m in with my university I’ve been teaching at for 4 years without a contract…and it’s an arduous task…with AI taking over most things including job application sifts what are people going to do in the future for jobs?

Thinking of my friend & former cricket team mate Piers on the 20th anniversary of this horrific natural disaster…he was such a nice guy & no surprise his last act was saving somebody else’s life at the expense of his own…miss you buddy RIP 🏏 ❤️ #tsunami

Bad idea this…bigger isn’t better…this could impact on the emergency services in terms of geographical alignment…multi-agency working watered down and a disproportionate spread on services as the largest conurbations hoover up all the money & resources…

Graham makes a very valid point with this situation…often just calling out ‘danger’ here can draw people into it all rather than divert them away…some can’t help but become inquisitive about things like this & extremism etc…and that can lead down a path that wasn’t originally intended

The 13,000 neighbourhood police plan is back in the news today…I took a look a while back at how this will pan out and the table here shows who will (very likely) get how many and based on the 20k Uplift by the previous govt relative to the current funding formula

Things can only get better…well…no they ain’t…this is a huge mistake doing this…bigger is NOT better…everywhere this has been done in the last few years the resulting unitary’s are one step from bankruptcy…to prop them up your council tax goes up…and the level of services goes down…abandon ship!
