Maximize shareholder value gives way to maximize presidential popularity.

But yes, he's right about one thing, 2024 was a very good year.

Just to state the obvious: While negative, this quarter was *dramatically* buoyed by consumers and firms stocking up for the storm to come. This will not be like the past few recessions and slowdowns which were countered by swift government policy action. It's going to hurt.

Maybe he’s right. Elon Musk is autistic and doesn’t pay taxes. #RFK
Autistic people and their loved ones have swiftly and publicly rejected statements by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nation’s top health official, that people with autism will never play baseball, date, pay taxes or have a job.
RFK Jr. said autistic people don’t work or play sports. They say he’s wrong.
The health and human services secretary on Wednesday suggested that autistic children would never play baseball or pay taxes, enraging those in the community.

Trump's plan for tariffs: the real plandemic.
April 7, 2025 at 11:04 AM
Speculating origins of Trump's tariff calc:

Trump wanted big numbers for his tariffs. He knows that the real bundled-trade tariffs were only 2-3%. He needed a number with more zazz. His imbecilic (x-m)/m bullshit calculation backed him into the big numbers, numbers with the zazz that he wanted.,

Resolution paradox:

How can be Trump open to reciprocal cutting of tariffs on the countries he imposed tariffs on when Trump's tariffs were not based on, you know, other countries' actual tariffs?

Thankfully for billionaires the price of Russian caviar is unchanged, as there are no tariff increases for either Russia or Belarus.

For the EU or China, the simplest countermeasure / response to Trump's tariffs would be to say something like "At lower trading volumes, we'd be less likely to buy US Treasury debt, and may unwind part of our current position to counteract the impact of tariffs on our labor markets."

When input prices rise, the supply curve shifts left, and firms produce less output. Labeling one a price shock and the other a tariff is irrelevant.

There is evidence: stable democratic institutions (e.g., rule of law, property rights) limit policy uncertainties, fostering economic decisions. In short, stable democracy enables stronger growth.

Trumpism is nether stable nor democratic

Even without the effect of Covid, Trump's first term featured below average for growth of real gross private domestic investment. Expecting a better outcome from a more unstable Trump seems like wishcasting from the get-go.

Foreign travel to the US generates $150-$200 B in spending per year. It's being felt now at the border from diners to malls that Canadians used to frequent. It's being felt in summer bookings for US vacation destinations. This is terrible for the people who rely on tourists' spending.

Keep an eye out. Wednesday will feature the release of the February CPI estimate. A better-than-expected reading would be seen as a positive; worse than expected would be seen as tying the Fed's hands on the next rate cut. A jittery market makes for an asymmetric response.

If that’s what it costs to keep him out of the Oval Office, let’s do it.
A couple of golf outings could pay for over 300 federal jobs for an entire year.
So…..fraud and waste? Eh?!?!

The Trump administration is threatening sanctions, ON THE VICTIM, if they do not roll over and spread their legs.

There are no security guarantees in the 'minerals deal,' just payments to the US in perpetuity.
