Take off to the bright orange star Betelgeuse 🚀🌟

The star underwent an unprecedented dimming in late 2019 and early 2020. Observations later revealed that it was caused by a dusty veil shading the star, due to a drop in temperature on the star's surface.

Open Sesame!

The ELT doors have moved for the first time. This was no small feat, as each door will weigh 650 tonnes once completed.

The ELT dome & its doors will guard the telescope from the harsh conditions of the Atacama Desert.

Join us on a trip to the "cosmic bat" 🚀🦇

This bat is in fact a large stellar nursery, whose most prominent gas clouds are RCW 94, which represents the right wing of the bat, and RCW 95, which forms the body.

Paranal’s location in the southern hemisphere & Chile's uniquely #DarkSkies made this possible https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw2542a/

Meet NGC 1232!

This galaxy lies some 60 million light-years away in the constellation Eridanus. Its central areas contain older, reddish stars, while the spiral arms are populated by young, blue stars and many star-forming regions 🔭

So far away, that its light has taken more than 11 billion years to reach us. This means that we see it as it was when the Universe was just 2.5 billion years old.

Astronomers have created a galactic masterpiece!

Using our VLT, they observed the Sculptor Galaxy in thousands of colours simultaneously 🌈

The more shades of colour there are in an image of a galaxy, the more we can learn about its inner workings.

We love lasers: they help us sharpen our observations of the Universe, through a technology known as adaptive optics.

We are now testing next-generation lasers, and ESO's ELT will also be equipped with lasers to launch into space!
