Horsey photobomb 🥰

Buxton looking festive a couple of nights ago, though The Crescent was quite sober! It might catch up soon, as there were two large Xmas trees out front, presumably waiting for some decos.

Anne Lister's love, Miss MacLean, was busy OTD 1824: "Very kind letter crossed entirely throughout from Miss McLean, written at several different times from November 22 to December 27, on which day it was sent off from Tobermory" (22 Jan. 1825) (Tobermory. Image credit, Wikipedia)

"driving about 6 1/2 miles an hour heated Caradoc – it is rather too fast for him with such a weight to drag, and perhaps a little beyond his speed ... Got out at the Great hotel (Buxton) at 8 35/60" (A Lister, 4 Aug. 1825)
Imagine the scene, a coach replacing the car, + lights differently powered 👇

Buxton Opera House last night.

I do like Buxton!

Nice, in’t it?!

Ah - happy times: pre-Covid; we’d had the wonderful Gentleman Jack earlier in the year; and it was my first (of several now, always so enjoyable in various ways) to Halifax and specifically Shibden Hall 🥰!

I don’t know many plant names, but it’s usually easy to spot a dahlia. I love how they keep going strong even in the second half of October.

So this was pretty exciting! 🥰

An impressive example of topiary if ever there was one!

Anne Lister didn't think much of this tower at Chatsworth, Derbyshire - it "put us in mind of warehousing" when she visited with Ann Walker in 1835 (it had been erected since her visit there with Mrs Lawton in 1825).

How exquisite is this?

I can never walk along here without thinking of Anne Lister and M- and their overnight stay here, and visit to the church, in 1825 when on a mini-tour of the Peak District. 🥰

It’s almost that spooky time of year, but my first fleeting thought on catching sight of this stone with two drill holes surrounded by lichen shouldn’t have been one of these 💀!

Shame there weren't a few more lights on, but I like the photo anyway. It gives a good impression of how Anne Lister's Aunts Anne and Martha would have seen their Buxton Hotel, St Ann's Hotel, at night during their stays there in the 1790s and 1800s: www.packedwithpotential.org/profiles/mar...

Glorious out today, with the warm sun on my back 🙂

All this plastic - ready-made nurdles 😱
September 20, 2025 at 1:40 PM
So many locks - what a hassle! And IIRC, at least at one point Anne Lister thought that the railways wouldn’t catch on.

The arboretum was (is!) very lovely 🥰🌳

Grapes nearly ready.

What’s the Latin for “Scram!”?
😆
Dogs were spoiling drying clay tiles nearly two millennia ago (so glad one did). You’ve gotta love dogs.

A very plain* WW1 and WW2 memorial, very much of its time (erected 1951).

*I like it!

Summer, still, but a sense of some other season around the corner!

Almost monochrome, but not quite. Lovely day by the sea.
