So bus fare evasion explosion actually did not start as soon as the MTA started collecting fares after the Covid free buses period – at that point, evasion was not that different from pre-Covid. It was more closely associated with the OMNY rollout, which starting getting people off of passes.
An interesting investigation in @upshot.nytimes.com today evaluating some of the challenges to improving buses in NYC—whether through speed or fares www.nytimes.com/interactive/... (gift link!)

Interesting tidbit: Bus ridership is basically back to pre-pandemic levels—but fare payment is way down.

oh did I mention that that's my own paper?
You know the publication industry is so not well when you clicked in a journal article and your Rakuten plug-in reminds you there are three available coupons for this website

Our new paper at TR-D authors.elsevier.com/a/1kGKc4rgZi...

We use large-scale mobile device location data to infer the evacuation behavior during Hurricane Ian in 2022. The landfall area has much lower evacuation rate but higher partially-compliant rate, correlated with late order in the area.

Seattle's Sound Transit light rail system carried 106,000 riders on the average weekday in October, reaching a monthly record of more than 3 million trips www.soundtransit.org/ride-with-us...

Ridership has been powered by extensions to Northgate (2021), Lynnwood (2024) & Bellevue (2024).

believe it or not, we did a paper on this: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

There were 200 - 800 people with mobility disabilities in Columbus Ohio who were actively using public transit service, even in the worst days of COVID. That number sometimes exceeded the **paratransit users**.

“The cost of living in harm’s way has gone up disproportionately,” said @benkeys.bsky.social. “We are seeing the first broad-based direct cost of climate change for homeowners because of these insurance increases.”

We're still in the early days of this crisis.

Writing the first ever letter of recommendation for students and it does feel... I don't know... assuring and relieving? I always felt kinda guilty for troubling my reference considering how busy they are, and now it's my turn. It does feel like a part of my job to help the next generation.

Insurance is the canary in the coal mine for the climate crisis. No insurance -> no mortgages -> no housing market.

Most fun in the geosciences department is that everyone does all kinds of different research. I study buses and my colleagues study sea cucumbers with little wings

Someone clearly submitted a paper and recommended and then impersonated two fictional reviewers. I wonder how they found this lol, maybe reviewer 2 was not harsh enough

I had to reject my top candidate because the candidate didn't pass security screening. Just saying - we need international students more than international students need us.

If anyone is curious, clearly if you delete fields in a geopackage layer and export it to feature class, the output feature class's fields will be shifted two columns all together because I guess they will regenerate shape_length and shape_area and therefore messed up the whole table
Sometimes I feel sorry for my students. These small bugs can really be hurting the whole images of GIS as a domain. And I don't know how many wrong conclusions researchers and planners got by just error 4. The worst type of errors is the errors without error message.
ArcGIS bugs I encountered in THIS afternoon:

1. Joining shapefile and csv broken.

2. Export joined shapefile to feature class messed up all attribute table.

3. Cleaned cache and the problems persist. Finally do it in QGIS.

4. Deleting fields and then export feature messed up order of fields
