my experience so far with online publishing for @xcel.blog, mainly with websites like RoyalRoad, is that unless your offering falls exactly into the specific niche categories that are most popular, more derivative genre fiction that people are used consuming, most won't even give it a second glance
Writing especially gets much less engagement than artwork or video, usually because of the time commitment involved.
If you think someone's "probably received plenty of compliments" on their writing, you are wildly overestimating how much actual feedback small-time non-fanfiction writers get.
