Something that really bothers me about more recent (Gen 8+) Pokémon games is how they butchered the pattern of level up moves; for example, in Gen 7 Whismur learns moves every alternating 3-4 turns: 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, etc. But in newer gens nearly ALL Pokémon learn moves ever X levels.

Btw I'm thinking about Colosseum because, and this might be a bit of copium, but compared to handheld games, the battles are slower, smoother, and the overworld doesn't have as many harsh changes of scenery. So it might be better for my visual overload issue. Ofc I'd have to play at 1x speed.

I was casually looking at a Colosseum run without using Gen 1 moves, and legit, one of the relatively more viable strategies is Smelling Salts + paralysis. There are 3 available moves that inflict paralysis—Dragon Breath (on Swablu & Vibrava), Spark (Plusle and Raikou) and Secret Power (Umbreon).

Sometimes I think about how lazy GameFreak was by naming all the Sevii Islands after numbers, including their towns, despite the fact that the islands at least actually have proper names.

But then I remember one of the Azores' islands is literally called Third.

So I learned there are a bunch of moves that changed category between Gen III and Gen VI, including a bunch of moves that became Cute, namely:

Ember, Soft-Boiled, Dizzy Punch, Astonish, Fake Tears, Grass Knot, Substitute, Barrage, Double Slap, Egg Bomb, Lick & Rollout
So I had this idea of using on moves of a certain Contest condition in a run. Here's what I found out:

Tough & Beauty: lots of powerful moves, easy.

Cool: might be hard to get some moves but doable

Clever: a bit trickier than Cool, but also doable.

Cute: OMG WHY

YIL (yesterday I learned) that Portugal used to give out a chilvaric order called the Sash of the Three Orders to foreign heads of state, including good ol' Napoleon. But in 1962 they made it exclusive to the President of Portugal. Any guesses as to who the last living foreigner with this honor was?

People who are confidently wrong about things drive me up the wall.

People who play games worse than I would have make me not wanna watch their content anymore.

...Tho nowadays that's not really a thing I can do properly 🙃

I was humming & hawing about which Normal-type to use in the "No Gen 1 Moves" challenge. First I thought of Persian, then Tauros, then Snorlax (who learns Belly Drum)—but I think I'm going with Kangaskhan. I've never used one, and it learns all moves I want (Iron Tail, Shadow Ball, Return)

I've gotten 2 Rare Candy and a Nugget from Pickup, but still no Hidden Power 😔

Happy New Year everyone. Maybe this year be best than the last 😊

Trying to think of funny ways to have a Shadow Unown be interesting, and I think this set is actually kinda nasty. All "power" moves with a lot of synergy with each other (getting off an omniboost would make Stored Power extremely OP).

Phew. That didn't take long. Only my 3rd Abra. That's good enough. I'll take base 59 Psychic! And decent IVs too.
December 29, 2025 at 7:37 PM
It all comes down to Alakazam. Bah, I didn't want to run it, but alas. If only Shadow Ball was special in this gen!
In-game trades have set IVs 🙃 Mimien's Hidden Power is Ground.

Back to the drawing board, I guess.
I decided to forgo Clefable in lieu of Mr. Mime with Magical Leaf, Shock Wave, and Hidden Power Psychic, and then Dewgong with Water Pulse, Icy Wind, and Signal Beam. Just gotta reset a bunch for that HP Psychic, I suppose.

Okay, so I started to play this "run" for fun on my phone.

And I got a migraine. So apparently the problem isn't the screen type, it's something like the fast eye movements. Even a pokémon game has those, I guess. Or maybe it's stress? Dunno 🤕

Also, this run is HARD.

Me and my Meowth army 😅

(that item was a Nugget btw)

This is actually way harder than you might think. The problem is that Gen 3 is right on that sour spot before the physical/special split that added a bunch of powerful moves for every type. Meaning that good moves are rare and/or are signature moves of Pokémon that aren't even in the game.

My migraines have slowly but surely developed into being practically left side only.

The more I think about Return, the more baffled I am about its design.

Normal types can learn a wide variety of moves to compensate for not being super-effective with their STAB. But Return practically invalidates this—with 153 max power after STAB, only SE moves above ~80 will deal more damage.
In another edition of "Trite wastes time doing math" we have a full rework of Return! I think it's a great move in concept, but it has two big problems related to how it scales linearly with Friendship when most moves scale logarithmically as the game progresses.

This is hilarious. I went on Bulbapedia to grab the eyecatch of the Tanoby Ruins, and apparently *I* was the one who uploaded it to Bulbapedia 15 years ago in the first place (yes, that's my original username). I was 14 😅

I have ZERO recollection of this, but it does sound like something I'd do.
