Hubble Sees a Young Star Take Center Stage - From Goddard Space Flight Center - https://flic.kr/p/rssNC7
With its helical appearance resembling a snail’s shell, this reflection nebula seems to spiral out from a luminous central star in this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image. The star in the center, known as V1331 Cyg and located in the dark cloud LDN 981 — or, more commonly, Lynds 981 — had previously been defined as a T Tauri star. A T Tauri is a young star — or Young Stellar Object — that is starting to contract to become a main sequence star similar to the sun. What makes V1331Cyg special is the fact that we look almost exactly at one of its poles. Usually, the view of a young star is obscured by the dust from the circumstellar disc and the envelope that surround it. However, with V1331Cyg we are actually looking in the exact direction of a jet driven by the star that is clearing the dust and giving us this magnificent view. This view provides an almost undisturbed view of the star and its immediate surroundings allowing astronomers to study it in greater detail and look for features that might suggest the formation of a very low-mass object in the outer circumstellar disk. Despite the intermittent clear skies lately I have now managed to finish the first proper image with my new 12.5" scope. In order to assess the new scope's capabilities I chose a target slightly less obscure than normal: The Horsehead Nebula and NGC2023. Oh well, I guess one is not really an astrophotographer without an image of this classic under one's belt! About the image: The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33) is without doubt one of the most recognized and fascinating objects in the sky. This iconic feature is formed by the sharp outline of a dark dust cloud, with a remarkable likeness to a horse's head, silhouetted against a brightly glowing patch of ionized Hydrogen (IC434) that is being energized by the hard ultraviolet radiation from nearby Sigma Orionis, a quintuplet star system lying just outside the top of the image. I sought to process this image to show not only the Horsehead silhouette but also the details of the dense dust cloud (Lynds 1630 molecular cloud) from which it emerges. The background behind the Horsehead glows with a soft diffuse reddish/pinkish light because of strong emission by spectral lines from ionized Hydrogen. Visible in the foreground is the large looming shadow being cast by the Horsehead's tower of dust, appearing as a dark fan-shape down towards the bottom centre-left, intercepted on its left edge by the intricate bright blue reflection nebula NGC2023. A pretty cool public lecture from STScI's Frank Summers is over on Youtube. Explains all these weird shapes far better than I can: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2Fte8xkTpo The famous Crab Nebula, a supernova remnant that contains a pulsar with a bright wind nebula intermixed among remnant filaments. Here, I've removed the wind nebula completely, along with the stars and the pulsar itself, leaving only the strange tendrils of leftover from when the star exploded many hundreds of years ago. Apparently the pulsar, not the initial supernova explosion, is responsible for the much of the intricate shaping of the filaments. Oddly enough the nebula does look a bit fake to me with all the stars removed. Some of the fakeness is also due to the way I covered the awkward edges where the data ended due to the footprint of the WFPC2 detector. Hopefully it doesn't look too bad, though. Speaking of WFPC2, can you believe Hubble still hasn't looked at this nebula in color since the observations comprising this mosaic were made around 20 years ago? The center has been looked at it relatively recently in polarized light, a mediumband and wideband green filter, and once in near-infrared but never again in enough filters to produce a color image of the whole nebula. You might think that the Crab Nebula is very popular and looked at quite frequently, but that's not the case.
