The reaction to GDT’s Frankenstein has been surprisingly polarized. I’m seeing a lot of vehement takes I can’t get fully behind either direction, bc I’m somewhere in the middle? So much I loved, but I have critiques. I’ll rewatch, since we’re probably covering it on @inktofilm.bsky.social

Jake Kasden reimagines Jumanji for a modern audience while making clever connections to the original that manages to keep this latest entry in line with the classic Robin Williams-led version. He delivers star-power with The Rock, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart, who all give memorable comedic performances. Del Toro's Frankenstein made me think of THIS adaptation, which honestly it might have the most in common with. Let's talk about "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" (1994)!

In "Room 237" Rodney Ascher presents wild interpretations/conspiracy theories about "The Shining." Some are relatively grounded, while others rely on outlandish ideas. But is it possible the whole doc is a deliberate showcase of fan obsession & over-analysis?

What's the point of meaningless death? "The Long Walk" (2025) takes a stab at providing an answer, and in the process changes a Richard Bachman story into one more in line with Stephen King's sensibilities. But which version was better? Let's discuss!

THE LONG WALK--It's time for our first Richard Bachman book! Let's take a look at the truth behind the name, a Vietnam War allegory, the role masculinity plays in controlling young men, and what makes this one of the bleakest stories we've covered.

It’s time to appreciate the original film the American remake owes so much of its success to. Let’s talk about “Ring” (1998).

Starship Troopers (1997) is THE blueprint for #Helldivers.

Paul Verhoeven’s adaptation of Heinlein’s classic novel divided critics at the time, but its antifascist subtext sure hits different in 2025.

Unlike the movie, Robert A. Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" is NOT a satire... but is it worth reading today?

A change up from our typical writer guests, Shayna Hodge runs a massive book club here in Portland (300+ people) and was an absolute delight to have on our podcast.

Show them some love and give this a listen? We're spoiler free to kick things off!
Nightbitch (2024) takes on Rachel Yoder's ambitious debut, but does it have the same bite?

My early thoughts on the Anthropic settlement:
a) good, fucking pay us
b) no, that’s not enough
c) shouldn’t have stolen our shit to train your stupid mediocre plagiarism artbarf robot in the first place, you fuckers
d) this isn’t something to celebrate; it is a Pyrrhic victory at best

I've seen people laughing at the idea he could be covering up bruises from handshake trauma, but I actually buy it.

He's a notorious asshole who tries to "win" handshakes by painfully squeezing & jerking people's arms towards himself.

Maybe some of those world leaders he met with didn't back down?

Norwescon '24, @luminousluke.bsky.social and I made a bet. We'd have completed novel rough drafts by Norwescon '25. The prize? A bottle of decent whiskey. If only one of us met the goal, they'd get the bottle to themselves. If neither of us succeeded we'd watch our friends enjoy it instead.
