I'm autistic and dental cleaning is torture to me - moreso than cavity filling.
What helped me survive today:
🕶️ an eye cover so I don't get blinded
⚾ a squeeze ball for stimming
✨ info! about every step
I didn't even disclose my full dx - just sensory sensitivities and it was enough 💖

Dividing the autism spectrum when we have already SN levels makes no sense. Some allergies give you hives, and some can kill you. They are the same thing, only the degree varies, so you can use an adjective to be precise: mild allergy. This applies to many conditions, why should autism be different?

Food for thought.
When confronted with "autistic people cost a lot and produce nothing" a lot of you try to prove otherwise.
The most vulnerable don't have that line of defense but they are still worthy. HUMAN.
Let's change the ableist system instead of perpetuating it just to save our own skin.

We need more intersectionality in autism spaces.
More listening to Black, brown, racialised voices.
More awareness.
More us, being as one.
Less me, me, me.

Autism be like...
At a party: NO I'VE TOLD YOU I DON'T DANCE -
While grocery shopping: *suddenly dancing to some silly jingle playing in the background*

I wanted to make myself porridge for breakfast, but we were out of milk.
I have nice recipe books and I knew there were no milk breakfasts that I liked in there.
It still took me 1.5 hr to come up with a plan B because my brain went in a "nah" mode.

Today, seeing so many incorrect, superficial, partially true or simply false statements about autism posted even by my fellow autistics, I stand by the opinion that we still need autism awareness. Yes we deserve acceptance but awareness is crucial #autismawarenessday #autismacceptanceday

We need both autism awareness and autism acceptance.
Awareness without acceptance is oppressive.
Acceptance without awareness is superficial.
We need both.

I've just finished and I wholeheartedly recommend Failure to Communicate by @kaiasonderby.bsky.social to anyone who enjoys good scifi. And yes, the main character is openly autistic with familiar struggles and weaknesses... and a true badass at the same time.

Slowly finishing the book I bought with a plan to read and possibly recommend it for Disability December, but then I got caught between my other hyperfixations & SI's, executive function wobbliness, and other autistic shenanigans, so it's March already. If this is not ironic I don't know what is

When someone says "you don't have kids so you can't possibly know what tired means"
Don't start this shit with me. I'm autistic and hypothyroid.
You merely adopted the fatigue. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the energy until I... who am I kidding, still haven't seen it

I know that autism is not only about deficits and hardships, we're not broken and we don't need a cure
BUT
while trying to fix that approach and showing a different perspective, let's be careful not to sell an "all sunshine and rainbows" vision of autism, it's just not true either

We're watching a stream and Die Eier von Satan gets mentioned.
Me: oh that song is quite cool
My partner: yeah it's impossible to know you and not know the lore of that song
Yet about autistic realisation about being a lifelong Tool fan and infodumping at random times without knowing

Let's not use the word autistic when we mean passionate.
It's like saying you're depressed when you feel bummed or OCD because you have a preference.
Intense and particular interests are a symptom of autism, but they are not synonyms. It flattens the understanding of a complex condition. Do better.

Autistic life is a constant balancing act between hyperfixation and burnout, or just riding the former straight into the latter.

People, usually: Play for a few hours, then do and think about other stuff
Me (autistic): Play the game for 10 hours straight, forget about water, food, or toilet
Be super proud of the 2 breaks to vacuum and to make food - only because I promised to
When done, google fanfic recommendations

I just talked to my parents, and at some point the conversation went smoothly from showing new pins on my backpack to me infodumping about Hollow Knight for 30 minutes straight and showing them videos of Sisters of Battle and Zote. #autism #specialinterest

A0: hi it's my first time here, I'm a cat lover and space enthusiast, I love creating things, gaming, reading and witchcraft. For me autistic inertia is just like Newton's first law. If I'm doing whatever, it's hard to stop, if I'm not, it's hard to start. Switching tasks is double hard: stop+start
Q0: Introduce yourself! Say anything you like about yourself or your interest in #AutChat or in today's topic, autistic inertia.

Quick reference for this week's #AutChat questions (please wait till they're posted to answer):

Please, don't use "stereotypical" autism symptoms as an example of "Autism doesn't look like that".
Autism doesn't ALWAYS look like that.
But sometimes it does. And it's often HSN, the most vulnerable autistics, who "look like that". You've always felt invisible? Don't make them feel invisible then.

The conversation we shouldn't have: whether Elon is actually autistic - that's between him and his diagnostician
The conversation we should have instead: whether autism makes you devoid of empathy and humanity - NO IT DOESN'T
whether autistic people are able to be dicks - YES, some of them are
