There's much to celebrate for the environment in today's spending review

Money for sustainable farming, habitats & flooding has been protected. This is key to building a more resilient country that can withstand threats to food, communities & livelihoods posed by an increasingly volatile climate

This is what farming with climate change looks like

After the second worst harvest on record in 2024, farmers in England have had record breaking rain in September, followed very little rain and record breaking sun & heat in March & April

Good for berries I guess, less good for lots of others!

Last month, Defra abruptly paused applications to the sustainable farming incentive scheme, leaving farmers without funding options to support land management and nature restoration.

@lucypegg.bsky.social, senior political adviser, discussed the routes ahead with @climatecentreuk.bsky.social:
The government has abruptly closed new applications for the Sustainable Farming Incentive scheme, saying it had hit capacity-leaving a lot of farmers in the lurch.

We visited Horncastle Farm near Wakefield to see how this could affect their nature-friendly approach to farming.

Farmers have a critical role to play in building a resilient food system in the face of global instability. But they need to have certainty and clarity on future funding

If Ministers want value for money, the obvious next step is to re-open Higher Tier Countryside Stewardship and Landscape Recovery
Yesterday, #Defra abruptly announced that funding from the Sustainable Farming Incentive has dried up.

This was the only open Environmental Land Management scheme, creating an uncertain landscape for those feeding the nation and looking after our landscapes and critical habitats.

Already squeezed by supply chains, we wont tackle water pollution by playing a blame game with farmers. Our briefing looks at what govt can do to rapidly make progress on one of their flagship commitments. Plenty of scope to raise private finance, & ensure costs fall on those most able to pay.
Agricultural water pollution is responsible for 40% of rivers failing to meet good ecological status.

With water quality targets fast approaching, government must work with farmers to reduce this.

Our briefing highlights ten steps government can take, starting now 👇
