We are in a race to the bottom
I realize the government release says that GCtranslate won’t be used in areas where linguistic expertise is necessary, but come on. The basket of what’s acceptable use is going to grow and grow, as managers see the opportunity to save money, and as credulous politicians are sold on the life-changing magic of AI. Merchant appeared recently on Paris Marx’s Tech Won’t Save Us podcast, to discuss some of the effects of AI adoption on translators and translation: I heard over and over in my survey of translators, that the job was just as time-consuming…You’re not actually doing the translation, which is considering meaning, and considering context and place and person, and painting a picture of a game, or a piece of art, or prose, and then translating that. Instead, you’re taking the automated output and trying to see if it lines up, because somebody somewhere on the supply chain got convinced that that’s more effective and it can save the firm a few bucks. So, you spend money on the AI tool, but it’s not good enough to do the job, and so you still need a human who is going to take just as long to do the job, but you’ve made their role more soul-sucking and devalued it at the same time. Everybody wins!
