🇪🇺 EU Steel and Metals Action Plan recap!!

I’m probably one of the few people worldwide who had yesterday’s action plan release marked in my calendar.

TLDR: there is some big news, some rehashed news, and not many concrete measures. (1/8)

from carbon brief: in 2024 China invested $940 bn in clean energy, compared to $1.1 tn global investment in fossil fuels.

These kind of statistics make me hopeful for an energy transition instead of an enenrgy addition (as per Yergin/ Orzag)

just to weigh in on tariff-mania: a recent @csis.org estimate is that 25% tariffs on 🇨🇦 will cost ~$11.75 bn to 🇺🇸 importers of critical minerals from 🇨🇦. for eg: 🇨🇦 provides about half of 🇺🇸 nickel, which could shift to cheaper Indonesian nickel. www.csis.org/analysis/can...
Canadian Tariffs Will Undermine U.S. Minerals Security
Canada is the largest mineral supplier to the United States, and tariffs could hinder efforts to reduce reliance on China. The United States depends on Canada for uranium, nickel, and aluminum—key to ...

Interesting to read CRM aspect of the EU-Mexico agreement. Key points to highlight: no more differentiation between domestic price and export price, no export taxes. Usual language about sustainability. Matters mostly for fluospar, used in steel and aluminium supply chains, which Mexico provides 33%

big news in Chinese auto industry: "This is the first time that China's annual output of new energy vehicles has exceeded 10 million, setting a new global record for annual output of new energy vehicles"

This alongside the >50% NEV sales from Aug onwards is seismic

Renewables are 5-10x more sensitive to rates than fossils (it’s all capex no opex).

This is the central argument for climate oriented dual-rates by central banks, incl. ECB green targeted long-term refinancing operations (TLTROs).

‘Market neutrality’ biases in favour of fossil.

Was always going to happen. We are no doubt going to see more and more weaponisation of export controls of critical minerals. One to watch
Gallium & germanium are essential for semiconductors. Germanium is also critical for infrared technology, fiber optic cables, and solar cells.
Antimony is widely used in weaponry.
Graphite is the largest component by volume in electric vehicle batteries.

China bans export of gallium, germanium and antimony to the US - MINING.COM
China accounted for 48% of the world’s mined antimony last year, alongside 59.2% of global refined germanium production and 98.8% of refined gallium output in 2023.

does anyone have recommendations to read RE: critical mineral recycling? Don't know much about this topic so would be keen to learn more. How big of a deal is this?

Sharing this Critical Mineral starter pack I've just been added to. Happy to connect with so many critical mineral people on the sunnier side! Feel free to introduce yourselves, my inbox is open
I'm beginning a Critical Minerals starter pack;
it's very limited so far, but please message me if you have recommendations or want to be included.

Unfortunately I fear 'Trump-proofing' in the critical minerals area is far from advanced. A lot of Europe's current architecture (Sustainable Critical Mineral Alliance, Lobito corridor financed by G7) is inherently tied to US. China also likely to restrict exports in trade war scenarios.
Senior EU officials in Bxl and EU capitals have been talking about Trump proofing for over a year - on trade, fiscal space, the EU pillar within NATO, and Ukraine. Some of those plans are more advanced than others. Let's hope that unity as opposed to fragmentation now prevails 🇪🇺
