The challenge is that fascism can not easily, if at all, be countered by reason. Addressing the fears of the population or beating the fascists to the ground is usually what works.

Fascism is weakness. Nothing more than the bully on the school yard who really is afraid of everything and is strong until the second somebody oppose him or, more rarely, her.

Exactly. Fascism lives off the the fears in people who consider themselves disadvantaged, and who are not willing to accept responsibility for their own situation. Actually opposite of what fascists usually projects, like that they are strong and, often, some imagined master race.
I guess this is how facism always creeps in and sometimes manages to establish itself: seeking out disadvantaged people and bullhorning "us vs them" messages, repeatedly, until people are brainwashed
