Here is my latest astro image; ~44 hours exposure showing the majestic barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 located in the southern constellation of Fornax at a distance of 56 million light-years: www.rolfolsenastrophotography.com/…/Galax…/i-QVPs5Vq Visible in this deep image are several faint streams extending out from the main arms, especially along the Western and Southern edge of the galaxy (3 to 6 o'clock position). These may be remnants of mergers with smaller dwarf galaxies or perhaps structures within the spiral arms themselves. The galaxy is significantly larger than our own Milky Way, with the two main spiral arms spanning up to 200,000 light-years. The symmetrical arms curve around the entire galaxy forming an almost ring-like halo. Together with the prominent central bar the arms outline an elegant Z, making NGC 1365 one of the most striking and beautiful galaxies in the sky. Bright knots of young star clusters and red emission nebulae dot the entire galaxy, and in the centre dark dust lanes trace around a cosmic maelstrom. The active nucleus of NGC 1365 hosts a supermassive black hole with the mass of approximately 2 million solar masses and rotating near the speed of light. In the background the entire field of view is littered with distant galaxies of various sizes and shapes. Many of these can be seen through the spiral arms and tidal streams of NGC 1365. The first photo of the Andromeda galaxy was taken by astronomer Isaac Roberts #OTD in 1888.

The image, captured with his 20" reflector, revealed a clear spiral structure. But scientists at the time thought M31 was a nebula, a gas cloud in our galaxy. 🧪 🔭

Hubble Refines Distance to the Pleiades Star Cluster
Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have helped settle a mystery that has puzzled scientists concerning the exact distance to the famous nearby star cluster known as the Pleiades, or the Seven Sisters. The Pleiades cluster, named by the ancient Greeks, is easily seen as a small grouping of stars lying near the shoulder of Taurus, the Bull, in the winter sky. Although it might be expected that the distance to this well-studied cluster would be well established, there has been an ongoing controversy among astronomers about its distance for the past seven years.

The star cluster Pismis 24 lies within the much larger emission nebula called NGC 6357, located about 8,000 light-years from Earth. The cluster is seen here above a small portion of the nebula. The gas below the stars glows through ionization caused by intense ultraviolet radiation from the massive young stars within the cluster. Star-forming regions in the Carina Nebula

Left] -- A towering "mountain" of cold hydrogen gas laced with dust is the site of new star formation in the Carina Nebula. The great gas pillar is being eroded by the ultraviolet radiation from the hottest newborn stars in the nebula. [Right] -- A close-up look at the peak of one of these "pillars of creation" reveals unequivocal evidence that stars are being born inside the columns. A pencil-like streamer of gas shoots out in both directions from the pillar and ploughs into surrounding gas like a fire hose hitting a wall of sand. The jet is being launched from a newly forming star hidden inside the column. A similar jet appears near the bottom of the image. These stellar jets are a common signature of the birth of a new star. This image is from a mosaic of the Carina Nebula assembled from 48 frames taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys. The Hubble images were taken in the light of ionized hydrogen. Colour information was added with data taken at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. The star cluster Pismis 24 lies in the core of the large emission nebula NGC 6357 that extends one degree on the sky in the direction of the Scorpius constellation. Part of the nebula is ionised by the youngest (bluest) heavy stars in Pismis 24. The intense ultraviolet radiation from the blazing stars heats the gas surrounding the cluster and creates a bubble in NGC 6357. Read more about this image here.

Core of the Crab Nebula|NASA|
The core of the Crab Nebula is a pulsar, which is a small, rapidly spinning neutron star at the center of a massive dead star: The pulsar is the dense core of a star that died in a supernova explosion. It's about the same mass as the sun, but compressed into a sphere that's only a few miles across. The pulsar spins 30 times per second, emitting pulses of radiation ranging from gamma rays to radio waves. This makes the Crab Nebula easy to detect with a telescope. The pulsar's magnetic field and energetic particles create a "pulsar wind nebula". This nebula includes: Bright wisps: These wisps move outward from the pulsar at half the speed of light, forming an expanding ring. Glowing gas: This gas forms a swirling pattern of cavities and filaments. Ghostly blue glow: This glow is radiation given off by electrons spiraling in the pulsar's magnetic field. The Crab Nebula is located in the Milky Way, in the constellation Taurus, and is 6,500 light-years from Earth. It's also known as Messier 1 (M1). CreditsNASA and ESA; Acknowledgment: J.
