A single fighting game character is untold amounts of upfront artwork cost before you can even begin designing their moves, and then all of that has to slot in with the rest of the game. In a Doom-like game, tools for level design are so battle tested that getting to the fun part is much faster.

I just think the time commitment for *making* a polished fighting game experience is much, much larger than that of an old-school FPS. Part of what makes old-school FPSs so approachable from a dev perspective is how little upfront cost there is before design work can actually start.

wanna chime in that we gave up on the Linux native version of our Unity game quite early on. Luckily Proton/Steam Deck came into public consciousness right around that time and the game ran wonderfully with it

I remembered earlier one of these is the guy who wanted to make his own AI spiritual sequel to Elf lol

"formal you" is way simplifying it but it's a more regal version of anata
November 18, 2025 at 11:10 PM
sonata = formal you, it sounds like the king addressing you as "you who wants to travel following your father's footsteps"
November 18, 2025 at 11:09 PM
it's bewildering isn't it

it is pretty self evident by the size of the indie market that the 10% or so of players who *are* enthusiasts and buy multiple games a year are more than capable of sustaining that entire ecosystem by themselves, so why are we kidding ourselves
November 15, 2025 at 12:23 AM
yeah this is like totally it. there was data recently that mentioned that most people only ever buy 1 or 2 games a year and that's the segment targeted by that style of game design. are you telling me someone who buys 5+ games a year is gonna stop doing that because they're watching tiktok?

I've been taking a ceramics class and it's incredibly refreshing to practice a craft that doesn't require 500000000 things to come together before you see even the skeleton of a thing you made in front of you

I really think of all the crimes Strive committed, the one nobody ever talks about is how removing air teching made the game so much less interesting overall

reading your posts and the blog post in question, and some of my own thoughts in the direction GG as a series took, I feel like I have a manifesto I want someone to write titled "in defense of scrambles" because that's to me the thing that makes old FGs magical compared to newer ones

yeah, and I can't help but feel fighting game devs kind of *wanted* to fight against it with their incredibly reticence to show frame data in-game for the longest time, but they also kept designing games where frame data was more and more and more important than ever!

I can’t really find a word for how to describe modern fighting games other than “overdesigned”, which I kinda hate but really I don’t know that there’s any other way to talk about it in a shorthand manner

This idea has been in my mind re: fighting games, how we have ended up with most games scrunching down the viewport more and more, and how it affects how the games play. Super obvious in something like Guilty Gear

this is how I feel with fighting games about hitbox/hurtbox interactions and fighting games about property interactions lol

a lot of people treat games like a checklist of things they've consumed, and all they care is about the ability to check those off. it's unfortunately an entire section of people that has been trained by the market to behave that way

enemies have legit mixups that cover different options and you need to legit learn to pick the one that counteracts all of those! It's definitely one of the only times in a single player game I felt even a smidge of what fighting another human in a fighting game feels like
