But the issues aren’t the same, and the party hasn’t even taken the time or made the long-term investment in Latino communities to even realize it. If a candidate doesn’t take the time to go to your community, why would you vote for them? Ads on TV that no one is watching aren’t going to fix it.

I mention this because Black voters have a lot in common with ‘flyover country’ voters in that we feel overlooked by the party. Latino voters can say the same. Two weeks before elections, campaigns panic & run ads in Spanish. Just a translated version of the ads they run targeting white voters.

It would be relatively easy for Republicans to win enough Black voters who might be socially conservative to swing an election, but most of us aren’t voting for the party of bigots. Our survival comes first. The added danger is that the party takes Black voters for granted, and we know it.

but it feels true because candidates and party officials only talk to us in barbershops and nail salons right before elections when they realize they need our votes. The rest of the year, they don’t talk about issues plaguing the Black community.

The effort to be an inclusive party for many of us has made us SOUND exclusive in the way we talk about things. Ask Black voters about being forgotten or overlooked. A constant point of conversation is that the party hasn’t done anything for our issues. I don’t believe that’s entirely true,

If we want to welcome back the people we forgot, we need to speak in language that everyday folks get. There’s a reason Democrats win college-educated voters & lose everyone else. We’re not going to fix it if we don’t realize that we need to speak to non-college-educated voters in relatable ways.

Take a look at towns and cities that used to be big manufacturing hubs. Now they’re poverty-stricken, deep in the opioid and meth crisis, and don’t even have Democratic candidates addressing these issues. Or if they do, they get no support from the party.

We stopped using that phrase, but we have the same problem. We aren’t listening to folks outside of big cities. And on top of that, we aren’t even speaking to them. We’ve become so politically correct with our language that we’re not relatable to many people who should be Democratic voters.
