Show up in pop culture, collaborate with influencers and thought leaders who speak to everyday people. This is how you actually meet people where they are. AND LISTEN TO WHAT THEY ARE SAYING AND FEELING.

And we have to start NOW!

Get into the gaming world, where young voters spend their time. Host town halls on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Live. Engage with online communities in spaces where people are already talking—Reddit threads, Discord channels, and Twitter spaces.

Talking heads say, “we have to meet voters where they are.” But is it just lip service? ‘Where people are’ means leave no stone unturned. Forget TV ads. Respect & invest in social media. Hang out on EXISTING podcasts that actually interest folks, not podcasts w/old dudes talking about politics.

But the issues aren’t the same, and the party hasn’t even taken the time or made the long-term investment in Latino communities to even realize it. If a candidate doesn’t take the time to go to your community, why would you vote for them? Ads on TV that no one is watching aren’t going to fix it.

I mention this because Black voters have a lot in common with ‘flyover country’ voters in that we feel overlooked by the party. Latino voters can say the same. Two weeks before elections, campaigns panic & run ads in Spanish. Just a translated version of the ads they run targeting white voters.

It would be relatively easy for Republicans to win enough Black voters who might be socially conservative to swing an election, but most of us aren’t voting for the party of bigots. Our survival comes first. The added danger is that the party takes Black voters for granted, and we know it.

but it feels true because candidates and party officials only talk to us in barbershops and nail salons right before elections when they realize they need our votes. The rest of the year, they don’t talk about issues plaguing the Black community.

The effort to be an inclusive party for many of us has made us SOUND exclusive in the way we talk about things. Ask Black voters about being forgotten or overlooked. A constant point of conversation is that the party hasn’t done anything for our issues. I don’t believe that’s entirely true,

If we want to welcome back the people we forgot, we need to speak in language that everyday folks get. There’s a reason Democrats win college-educated voters & lose everyone else. We’re not going to fix it if we don’t realize that we need to speak to non-college-educated voters in relatable ways.

Fetterman recently said, “fascism” isn’t a word that regular people use. I have issues with the rest of what he said, but he was right about that. We use that word constantly, but we’re speaking to ourselves.

So, what do we do to fix this? It’s going to be a long process, but the first step is to bring them into the conversation. The party needs to start speaking to them about issues they care about—in relatable language.

Trump and Republicans don’t address how they can make higher education affordable or the fact that we need to change what we manufacture in this country and implement retraining programs, but it doesn’t matter. Blame and hate are powerful drugs.

Voters in these towns and surrounding areas have decided our party is not for them, and Trump stokes the fire with the idea that BIPOC and immigrants are the cause of their problems. A problem he claims he can fix by deporting millions and canceling DEI.

RECAP: Once-booming towns collapsed because of NAFTA, a Democratic policy. They’ve fallen victim to cheap drugs, opioids, and meth, and the Democratic Party ignores them. Why would they vote blue?

Take a look at towns and cities that used to be big manufacturing hubs. Now they’re poverty-stricken, deep in the opioid and meth crisis, and don’t even have Democratic candidates addressing these issues. Or if they do, they get no support from the party.

Example, the party doesn’t address the closure of factories that policies—like NAFTA—caused. We can’t undo the past, but we need to acknowledge & listen to folks who suffered because of it. They blame Dems & voted for Trump because he makes them feel heard. He lies to them, saying he’ll fix it.

We stopped using that phrase, but we have the same problem. We aren’t listening to folks outside of big cities. And on top of that, we aren’t even speaking to them. We’ve become so politically correct with our language that we’re not relatable to many people who should be Democratic voters.
