Hey 👋 there. Decided to make separate accounts for #Climate posts. May be some slight overlap but trying to make it easier. Will take awhile to curate posts from the other place, which has the same address as my other account.

⚡New paper on predicting #lightning 🌩️ in the western US using CNNs with @dmitri-climate.bsky.social @zacklabe.com @climate-guy.bsky.social and others.

Key finding: CNN are quite skillful at predicting lightning here.

We are using these to develop projections of lightning-ignited #wildfires🔥.

“Increasing extreme climatic events threaten the functioning of terrestrial #ecosystems.

Because #soil #
#microbes govern key biogeochemical processes, understanding their response to #climate extremes is crucial in predicting consequences for ecosystem functioning.”
Really great study on soil microbiomes and how they respond to extreme events. Must read! 🧪🌍
It’s out!! We subjected soils from 30 different locations across Europe to extreme events and found that soil fungal and bacterial communities showed consistent responses that could be predicted from their origin! With @knightjar.bsky.social and many collaborators!

Great paper!

🎣 Fisheries science is sometimes skeptical of extinction risk b/c of the gap between overfishing and extinction risk thresholds

🚨 BUT this paper totally aligns with theory: small range size, low growth rate, and overfishing are a perfect storm for conservation risk

🦑🧪🌏 #MarineEcology
Updating the #IUCN status of marine fish using AI shows that x5 more species are threatened with extinction than previously thought!

see our study in Plos Biol with @nloiseau.bsky.social

👉 doi.org/10.1371/jour...

🔑 This silent extinction affects 12,7% of marine fishes (1337 species) !

My version of CH4 growth vs. NOAA's graphic of CH4 growth.

The difference is that NOAA updates theirs once a year based on the January reading, and I update mine monthly, based on the running 12-month average, taking into account methane's atmospheric lifetime.

Note the decrease since 2022.
