maybe more analogous to _alien soldier_, though, are rpgs where the regular encounters are mostly just popcorn and resource gathering between boss fights. i think quite a few work that way - particularly _labyrinth of touhou 2_ or _hat world_ come to mind (some non-indie games too, i'm sure)

facets comes to mind

i believe it has ten boss fights and no other encounters, but I haven't played it yet

i loved this comic for exactly these reasons

also how much it cares about its convoluted family history

the hope of a lot of different spaces, from webcomics to indie music to indie games.. was that the internet could be people's window into an alternative culture. and that sort of happened? but it also sort of didn't. so now everything's just kind of a weird amorphous blob.

a high cat-q score means you're masking something, or you have habits from masking something

it doesn't necessarily mean that that something is autism

i have a high cat-q score and am fairly sure that it's not autism

or at least that autism is not a useful label for me

i was thinking "this is Last Boss Shoujo Akari fanfic" - did it have other influences i should be reading?

expecting something to meet you exactly where you're at and be totally comprehensible to you sorta defeats the purpose of trying to understand or engage with an experience different from your own. but i think a lot of people are unwilling to ever try and make that leap

i think Douglas Kent might call it a "vine" in Complete Shibari? (not at home and can't check right now)

i've got mixed to low opinions of his books, though, and generally wouldn't use his terminology or expect to be understood if i did

You set up a charged, violent situation with high stakes, and you let it fall out however it falls out. You don't know at the outset whether it'll be heroic, pyrrhic, or tragic. It has the potential for all three, and nobody's promising you — not the GM, not the game designer — the one you want.

Play Unsafe was a huge paradigm shift for me in the way i thought about how to play rpgs. some of its bigger points have been absorbed into the story games play culture's common wisdom, but a lot of it hasn't

(high trust can also mean that for other reasons i am fairly certain they won't, possibly because it's been tested outside of rpgs)

(or players of the GM?)

medium trust means i'm going to take the risk of playing I Will Not Abandon You and hope they won't abandon me

high trust means we've been there and they didn't

low trust means i'm not going to play I Will Not Abandon You (and i probably won't play at all)

that will hopefully become a high trust group by the end of the campaign
March 11, 2025 at 7:33 PM
recently formed a group for a campaign of a game that would prefer a high trust group

there's exactly one other player with whom i don't have built up trust, but all other players have built up trust with both of us, separately

i think this makes it a medium-high trust group, for now

really interesting term overloading between two cultures of play (fairly certain Jay was thinking about the trust players have for each other [in terms of emotional vulnerability], and this seems to be about the trust that the system has for the players?)

people I haven't played with before but that i have reason to believe could handle the dark stuff

the raw material of a high-trust gaming group
