Thanks. Also FYI this was Berg's post I had meant to share. $270mm difference is still equivalent to ~400 new R01's, so not trivial.

But in general surprised me that the difference was relatively small (only 6.5% less funding for new and competitive renewals than in 2024).

bsky.app/profile/jere...
FY 2025 Total funding received for new and competitive renewal awards

Anticipated (based on FY2023 and FY2024: $4.1 B
(8574 awards)

Actual: $3.83 B (7245 awards)

Difference $0.27 B

Last month difference $1.63 B

$1.36 B of the difference has been made up

Some good-ish news from NIH

“Federal Register notices for study sections run by CSR (but not those by ICs) will start being permitted again”

As far as I know, the timing for this is not clear, but I will be checking the Federal Register.

I have run out of patience with the apparent silence of most US science institutions (and not just US) in the face of Trump & Musk's rampage. There are of so many facets of that, but in this column for @chemistryworld.com I talk about the assaults on inclusion.

Scientific institutions have a long history of anticipatory obedience
Societies should learn from this and speak up to support inclusion

It’s been buried in all the news today, but every scientist in the US should pay attention to this:

Mike Lauer went out on a limb for us all, sending out a memo saying institutes should start awarding grants. And it looks like Trump/Musk fired him for that. 🧪
NEW: In a further sign of turmoil at the NIH, Mike Lauer, who oversees the agency's $39 billion extramural budget that goes to research outside the NIH, has resigned effective tomorrow.

This comes after top NIH official Larry Tabak abruptly retired yesterday.

RFK Jr was confirmed.
There is a lesson here for the future.

The only chance that science had to stop RFK was a public relations strategy—to mobilize enough of the public that people not paying attention to politics would learn that he is a disaster. We failed at that. Let’s fix it and do better. 🧪

On Wednesday, NIH leadership distributed a memo, acknowledging that its funding freeze was illegal and directing staff to resume issuing grants.

98% of NIH grants that should have gone out this month, didn't. Despite court orders 'unfreezing' the funds, they are frozen. Biomedical research will grind to a halt. Clinical trials will end. All for no reason: the total impact on the US budget is miniscule
