Helping introverted scientists to speak up with confidence and become more visible without becoming overwhelmed. Learn to use your mental chatter as a constructive force rather than a destructive one. https://www.louisejefferies.com/
They don’t cause conflict.
They get their work done.
They’re polite, professional, quiet.

So you tolerate the silence.
But over time…

❌ Projects suffer
❌ Juniors dominate
❌ Mistakes go unchallenged
❌ Experience is sidelined

You're not just shy. You're a highly competent scientist quietly unravelling from the inside out, because your voice is stuck behind layers of fear, shame, and perfectionism.

You can read papers in English, write technical reports, understand what's going on in meetings and explain your research clearly one-on-one.

So why do you freeze when asked your opinion in meetings?

Watching Mimi sleep and listening to her purr instantly takes the edge off my stress and makes me feel good.

Apparently, I’m not alone in my reaction. Studies have found that the frequency of cat purrs fall into the healing range of 25-140 Hz which has been shown to help bone and tendon healing.

If you had meetings on a beach, cocktail in hand, you'd never be lost for words...
So no, it’s not your vocabulary.
It’s your relationship with the situation that needs a to chill. 😎🍹

Is it a superior scolding you for your weakness?
Are they criticising you for not being enough?
Is it a subordinate pleading for forgiveness for their imperfection?
Or someone begging not to be forced to give that presentation?

Thank you to #Amgen for hosting #HBA event this week.

It was an enjoyable evening of interesting discussions on the challenges and strategies for women in leadership in the life sciences industry. Many questions were raised such as:

What's the real barrier for women in healthcare today?

“I’m really seeing progress, I can now make at least one contribution during each meeting. For me this is the first little indicator of my stress diminishing.”

Feedback like this makes all my work worth while.

If you're struggling to make yourself heard, I can help you, too.

As an introvert self promotion can feel awkward, vulgar even. But it doesn't have to be to be that way.

When you get over yourself and learn to speak from a place of quiet authenticity you'll discover that even introverts can self promote confidently and comfortably.

Need help getting started?

I bet most of you realise that it's St Patricks's day today ☘️.

However, did you also know it's national introverts week? ☺️

Here are some of the favourite things that introverts have (privately) admitted loving:

🩵Home office
🩵Cancelled plans
🩵Binge watching Netflix

Just stop it!
Let go of your anxiety/insecurities etc.
You are enough, you just have to believe it!

I hate it when people say that to me 😡

Seriously, don’t they realize that it’s not that easy to let go of a fear that has defined who you are for the majority of your life 😤
March 16, 2025 at 10:17 AM
Carrot or stick? ...and how long are you willing to wait, until either appear in your life?

How uncomfortable do you have to get before you actually do something about the discomfort speaking up and representing yourself and your work?
March 15, 2025 at 7:23 AM
We all face different challenges and a solution that works for one person inevitably won't work as well for another.

The skill therefore in finding a way to move forward outside of your comfort zone is to find a way that fits to who you are, so that you can show up as your authentic self.

Your heart is racing. Your palms are sweaty. You’re about to present your work, and you just want to disappear. Sound familiar?

Stage fright is one of the biggest barriers for introverted non-native scientists, but it doesn’t have to hold you back.

Here's how to present with more confidence:

Ever sat in a meeting waiting to voice an opinion, only to hear someone else speak up and get all the credit?

As an introvert, finding a way to break into conversations can be hard. When you're also a non-native speaker, it's even harder.

What your if?

If you could do and be anything, what would the result be?

That's what Dr Shelina Jaffer asked me today. We met for a virtual coffee and chatted about being better versions of ourselves and the possible outcomes of that.
