When I was studying for my Psychology degree and criticised the use of ECT at the local mental health facility (broadly for the same reasons as above), I was roundly and publicly condemned by my professor, and lost a grade in my degree. Coincidentally, he was also senior consultant at the facility.

I’m aware this post might get aggrieved comments along the lines of “Oh, but it worked for me/Aunt Joan/some bloke I heard about, when nothing else did”. I fully acknowledge your experience, but refer you to the point that a NON-HARMFUL PLACEBO MIGHT HAVE HAD THE SAME OR BETTER RESULTS.

2/. Therefore, using ECT is based not on science, but on what amounts to medieval superstition. Not so much treatment as torture. Sadly, I’m not surprised at a study pointing out all the horrific harmful effects. I’ve firmly believed this for 45 years!
