PhD student at Trinity College, Dublin looking at art created in the old psychiatric institutions. I love books, dogs and tea and will begrudgingly exercise “for my health”.
Welp, two big rejections in the space of ten days meant I had to take a few days to motivate myself to keep going. I think I’m back in the right head space again now, just in time for the long weekend. This research business is tough but I owe it to those patients to see it through.

Who would think that a little drawing lain undiscovered for 125 years would lead to hours and hours of investigative fun learning about religious items used back in the 1890s? Not me that’s who but loving it all the same

Have to say, I do worry about the Windows default that allows Microsoft to scrape the content of Word for their AI database. What implications does this then have on AI checkers for those of us currently writing their thesis? Will our own work then flag as AI since it’s being scraped as we write it?

Sent my first paper submission off and will now wait impatiently to hear it has been rejected. There’s simply no way anyone would be crazy enough to let me prattle on about drawings in such a lovely, prestigious conference. Still, it’s nice to try

Have my first review soon and it seems I’ve done a lot this year already without really realising it. Nothing compares to the joy of finding a little piece of art that no one has seen in 100 years or more. Here’s to bringing them all to light where they can be appreciated properly.

Just organising my archives notes today and realising I have found 25 artworks so far that no one knew existed. I always knew this work was out there and I’m so glad I persevered. Now to fight to get them out into the world where they can be properly appreciated

Spent two solid days in the archives, standing, flipping through page after page of old ledgers looking for drawings and finally found a tiny sketch in the corner of a letter. Worth it. 😊

Spending my days digging through journals & books & websites looking for references while John Connolly’s Arts Lives programme plays in the background. Charlie Parker & his friends are oddly comforting companions when you’re looking at psychiatric history, searching for bright sparks in the darkness

Ah the joys of research ethics. Discuss with supervisor, complete form. Send form off. Form forwarded to someone else. Someone else says I have to complete different form. Complete new form. Can’t finish new form bc it has to be approved by another someone. Email someone to look at form. Wait.

Hoo boy, a research and development plan. Haven’t a notion where to start. I mean, I have a ‘to-do’ list and I’m sure bits of that will go into the plan but I’m not sure which modules to choose for personal development.

Looks like I’m officially starting my PhD journey! Just received my unconditional offer which I have of course accepted. I can’t believe this has happened 🤯

How odd to be blocked for being an ‘ignoramus’. Was it my Dadd thread perhaps? 🙃

Spent a fabulous time last week discovering artwork. Was told to come back for longer days to try and find more. But haven’t heard a peep back since emailing early this week. Trying not to overthink it. People do have holidays I tell myself.

Good news today. I made a great find with the potential for more! That frizzle of excitement when you find an expected gem is just wonderful

I’m adjusting to the constant little knock backs that comes with research. After getting two confirmations of artwork being present on site I then got an email today saying there wasn’t any and if there was at one point, it’s likely gone by now. Fingers crossed it’s still there somewhere 🤞😬

I do this every now and then.

This is Domino. He's one of the dogs that has been the longest at the DSPCA.

Liz and I brought him out for a walk up to the Hellfire Club recently and he is a sweetheart...

What about adopting him?

A share would help too...

How about a little intro to my research area? Probably one of the best known artworks created in a psychiatric unit was those by Richard Dadd in Bedlam. Here we have some examples of his paintings (see alt text). These were painted during his years at Bedlam.

Hi everyone! I’m currently researching old artworks created by patients in the old psychiatric institutions of Ireland, the UK and further afield in Europe.
