People tend to focus on the monthly payment and ignore the total cost of borrowing, so a longer amortization makes a home seem more affordable. Bidding wars often ensue, driving resale prices up. This idea seems like a gift to sellers & lenders.

Wow. The Canadian government faced criticism a couple years ago when it allowed 30-year mortgages for 1st-time buyers instead of the previous limit of 25.
