Our laws always seem so toothless when dealing with the powerful.

From regulation of water to cybercrime to infected blood to post office scandal.. let’s have an inquiry and push the issue into the long grass.

I have a book for children coming out in March on this very theme. Loss & the space they leave behind. 💔

Quite a turnaround for Starmer faithful Polly Toynbee, to call for a leadership election. Not sure a change of leader is what we need, but a change in the narrative & the strength to take on - and win - arguments.
The final paragraph is spot on imo.

We must take him literally, but not seriously, or seriously but not literally…
seems to be the mantra of those who claim they know best, including Justin Webb… but no one anticipated this level of world chaos whatever they like to tell us.

The Right confects an issue, whips up a media frenzy of misinformation & racism, and Labour is too afraid to tell the truth.

As Farage rides high in the polls (albeit partially waning) more needs to be done to expose how destructive a force he has always been in our public life - undermining security, the economy & national unity.
His popularity remains a stumbling block to our ability to make urgent pro European choices.

It’s so clear why no victim would ever forget this. But I would also argue that the perpetrator would equally never forget that sense of ugly racist power.

What a fucking joke. What does it even mean? The corrupt accommodation of lawless thuggery.

It is not just for social issues that ppl vote labour. Allowing the markets to rule, & underfunding regulation, has let to increased inequality & broken services.
Private greed, public squalor is the legacy of right wing govts. I would argue that the public voted again in 2024 to change that.

As such a stickler for accuracy, how come Prescott’s own quote of Trump’s words were themselves inaccurate?

Harrowing story. The UK likes to tell itself stories about how generous we are, watch films about Nicholas Winton, & how ppl abuse our ‘hospitality’.. but the reality of how we behave towards the most desperate & vulnerable is a world apart.

Oh not again .. “The NHS is getting more and more expensive” says Kate Ferguson of the Sun.

Compared with other similar countries we spend less.

Before you destroy the model, compare how much we put in .. it’s been underfunded & demoralized for 14 years. #bbcaq

And yet the Right are fearful of not having the intellectual heft of the Left. Hence orgs like the Marshall backed Pharos foundation.
Did the Left fear of seeming out of touch with its “Red Wall” mean it underplayed its intellectual thinking?

Absolutely this. Her blythe assertion about the rules based order put in place after WW2 is wildly wrong, and all the more bewildering because of her history.
The rules based order was put in place because we had just seen how states could behave if unchecked.

Despite the widely acknowledged catastrophe of Brexit & its by-product of hollowing out of the Reform-aping Tory party, the Brexit revolution continues to eat its children, gobbling up any remaining shreds of honesty, integrity, sanity. Cleverly the latest opportunistic idiot.

At the current rate of social mobility in Denmark it takes 2 generations for ppl to move from the bottom 10% of income to the middle. In the US & UK it takes 5 generations. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

The Tory party is dead, empty, devoid of ideas, principle, self respect. This matters because of the alternative. In refusing to acknowledge their own disastrous legacy, they could only ape Reform. In doing that they have destroyed themselves.

“A return to the Cold War era” says Simon Calder on the new biometric rules on eu travel. Queues queues and more queues. “Heaven knows what it will be like on the first Saturday of the Summer holidays”.
