Why? Because this is due to me putting myself out there. Cold emails. Chatting (tentatively!) with colleagues. A (tiny!) bit of marketing. A few returning clients. Meaningful work. And a newfound sense of my own self-worth, for which I'm hugely grateful. (4/4) #BetterWorldWords #editor #editing

Last week I completed a full copyedit for a major non-fiction publisher. This week, when I didn't have capacity for work, I was able to recommend two other editors for the writer to approach. Maybe it doesn't sound like much, but to me, as a shy introvert, it's huge. (3/4) #AmEditing #freelance

I set up betterworldwords.com, trained with the Publishing Training Centre, joined @the-ciep.bsky.social and am committed to my professional development. I don't want to just get by financially (although that's nice!); I know I'm good at this, and I want to help people as best I can. (2/4)

I'm a writer and have worked in a support role in arts marketing, both employed and freelance, since 2008.

Things are the worst I've ever known. Worse than austerity, worse than Covid, worse than the cost of living crisis, as those economic changes become baked into our lives 💔

Yes, and I'm sure a lot of events that have sprouted in other parts of the country have been inspired by some of those regular nights in Manchester!

Lovely to read this. I was just starting to dip my toe into the Manchester spoken word scene when we moved away (+pandemic). I remember those nights & people v fondly. We moved again and I found a lovely open mic event in Darlington. It's a great way to build confidence - and community!

They're still amazing live IMO. (Felt v lucky to see them in Finsbury Park two years ago.) Although you can see Jarvis gasping for breath between his little dancy bits now. 😂

A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE is full of stories about communities uniting to preserve brainpower. And ends with What you can do, now.

As she writes, denizens - meaning a person that lives or is found in a particular place - the mind is a wonderful thing to save ❤️🧐

Read it. #loveisclimateaction

I reread Rilla of Ingleside (the last Anne of Green Gables book, set during WWI) last week. The characters are relieved when the British troops take Palestine as part of the war effort. 🙃 Quite disconcerting to see it casually dropped in there.

I just finished @aptshadow.bsky.social's Bee Speaker (which is great!) and there is an amazing example in there of one of these dudes having to live with the consequences of his actions.

Thanks! I'll be away that week, but hopefully will be at the December open mic.
