Eclectic reader, writer and book tragic; stories and songs make my heart go round. NE England via south coast, Sweden, Australia and London. She/her. Need a proofreader or editor? https://betterworldwords.com/
Why? Because this is due to me putting myself out there. Cold emails. Chatting (tentatively!) with colleagues. A (tiny!) bit of marketing. A few returning clients. Meaningful work. And a newfound sense of my own self-worth, for which I'm hugely grateful. (4/4) #BetterWorldWords #editor #editing

Last week I completed a full copyedit for a major non-fiction publisher. This week, when I didn't have capacity for work, I was able to recommend two other editors for the writer to approach. Maybe it doesn't sound like much, but to me, as a shy introvert, it's huge. (3/4) #AmEditing #freelance

Really grateful to have squeezed in a visit to the wonderful, sustaining exhibition of @misanharriman.bsky.social's photography at Hope 93 Gallery between trains yesterday. The Purpose of Light is running until 8 Jan 2026. Go and see it if you can. 💚 hope93.com/exhibitions/

Always my favourites!

Evening, Womble. I have had the BEST time finishing up The Raven Scholar this weekend. I think you've probably read it, but for anyone who hasn't, it's a wry, often hilarious narrative built on epic tragedy that keeps reverberating through the events of the story. Brilliant!

Sorry, that RSS link doesn't work. (Thank you for trying, though!)

After a massively busy August, work has been slow so far this month. If you know anyone who needs a copyeditor or proofreader for climate-related fiction or non-fiction, especially work that's solution-focused and justice-oriented, please point them my way. ☺️https://betterworldwords.com/ #amEditing

"The zero-G fight scene was always going in." I interviewed Matthew Lee, author of We Are the Ululating Tzatziki, about the book, its inspirations and the sheer bloody stubbornness that it takes to finish a novel. matthew-lee-author.com/interview-we...

I was a teenager when I last I finished a book and turned right back to page 1 - but I'm doing it now. What a book! Massive thanks to the lovely @podcastonmars.bsky.social for keeping the podcast episodes up so I have company on my journey, even 6+ years later! 😆 #RedMars #KSR #MaroonedOnMars

This obsessive was super-happy last night. Massive thanks to @reflexrecordshop.bsky.social for hosting a listening party for the new Pulp album. Only been waiting 24 years. 😍

Morning, Womble! The River Has Roots is high on my to-read list - but I'm currently finishing up In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan. Clearly several years behind the curve on this one, but it's amazing!

Happy publication day to We Are the Ululating Tzatziki – full of excellent Hitchhikers-esque hijinks & humour that 1 reviewer describes as "so dry you could cure your wet phone in it like a bowl of rice". It was a joy to edit for exactly that reason. Get a copy here: www.amazon.co.uk/Are-Ululatin...

My 12-year-old niece taught me you can toast potato waffles in an upright toaster. (This kind - I think toasters might be different over the pond.) Life-changing!

Always a delight when something I've edited goes out into the world, and this one is getting great reviews! We Are the Ululating Tzatziki by Matthew Lee is out in two weeks; pre-order now if you enjoy ridiculous space antics! www.amazon.co.uk/Are-Ululatin...

It's this book, btw, and it is really beautiful: Grassroots Economics: Reflections and Practice, by William O. Ruddick.

And here's the other book I finished today: From the Ashes by the amazing @sarahljaffe.bsky.social, which pulls together Palestine, COVID, labour rights (Durham Miners' Gala ♥️), the climate crisis and migrant crisis along with the importance of caring for one another through our countless losses.

Listening to this audiobook in the aftermath of the LA fires, while watching Trump and Musk gut US legislation and cosplay gangsters for the international media, has been really, really scary. Markley gets a lot right and some of his predictions have come true a few years earlier than predicted.

In line with open source principles, the PDF is available free at the above link. Grassroots Economics is an amazing organisation which is worth supporting and exploring. Also, there's more of that beautiful artwork sprinkled through the book.

I ordered a copy of Kiddar's Luck by Jack Common, a working-class novel by a working-class north-easterner and friend of George Orwell. Instead of that, I received a copy of something I can only describe as the polar opposite and socioeconomic mirror: Deliciously Ella with Friends.

WELL, look what I found in Darlington's Crown Street Library today! Only Mr @rsmythfreelance.bsky.social's A Sweet, Wild Note on display in the lobby.

Always lovely to get my name in a book! And to find a home for a story alongside some writers I really admire. <3
