As a WW I've always tried to listen to people but in the last five years it's become clear that we need to shut up and listen rather than being the gratitude police. And as a blind person, I know the gratitude police very well.

That's exactly it. Evaluating someone else's life is super disrespectful and error-prone. We have know idea what others have had to endure or fight against.
