The First Friend by Malcolm Knox was most disappointing - Lavrenty Beria in Australian vernacular? SOLD. Then I read it and was like, "Ah yes, not deadnaming trans people IS Stalinism in action, you are SO right, Malcolm."

I read a handful of Australian lit novels last year, and the most acclaimed turned out to be one man’s complaint that the kids today are too woke. The best were by women of colour, and under-reviewed.

I completely believe The Sound of Music is on his list because (a) he is a giant dork; (b) he's rebuking the far right Catholics who call it anti-Catholic propaganda because Maria gets married instead of becoming a nun.
