It took two attempts, bloodshed, the maximum allowable dose of gabapentin and one (1) cat getting stuck inside the structure of the couch, but the boys have had a visit from the vet and been pronounced Healthy. Which is especially a relief because they're FIV+!

I really enjoyed watching Sneakers last night, but we need to come together as a society and agree that we are NOT going to let Mary McDonnell's hair come back into fashion. Don't be fooled by its length, this is a HIGH MAINTENANCE CUT. It takes a lot of product to have hair this ugly!

I was going to advance a theory that we all love a Trent Dalton hatchet job because he's the only poppy tall enough to get a negative review in this country. But...
In the near decade I've been a book critic, I've received my share of fanmail, hate mail - even the occasional rape or death threat (greetings, Cormac McCarthy mega-bros). It's the price of the job, and I pay it. But I've noticed a pattern. When I criticise the work of a young woman, I'm feted - often grotesquely so. When I criticise the work of an Aussie man, I've made a gross moral error. The writer is a good bloke. Hard-working. Generous. Redoubtable. The implication: all criticism is off-limits, literary or otherwise. Which brings me to Trent Dalton.

Apparently it is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! Dale continues to regard himself as a victim of feline trafficking and genital mutilation, but yesterday I heard him purr as his brother cleaned him.
