I told this person they should start talking to the people showing up at the rallies, because the sheer sizes indicated something important was going on. But this person thought none of it mattered because “obviously” he was never going to be nominated

I had a convo w someone at the NYT in late summer 2015 who thought the Trump campaign was a hilarious joke, even though he too was drawing huge crowds at his rallies.

On the Dem side e.g., they were convinced that Clinton was going to get the nomination, and so even once Sanders’ campaign started drawing huge crowds, they didn’t change their coverage strategy bc of their conviction around Clinton.

As someone w a tiny smidge of inside knowledge wrt NYT thinking about the 2016 race, back in 2015: they genuinely lacked imagination wrt what might happen

And bc they lacked that imagination, I’m guessing they thought it was a non-story bc it never occurred to them he’d be nominated, much less win

Sometimes you have to wonder if they just assign someone to say something completely insane, to turn everyone’s attention away from the latest news on the Epstein files

I forget, are there a lot of federal workers (who aren’t being paid) in the DC area?

Ps: if your response is: “calm down, they were just being provocative for clicks,” consider how that headline would’ve read if it’d been about any other demographic group.

Do you think those groups’ advocacy orgs wouldn’t be banging down NYT doors this morning?

Agreed. We need to come to terms with the fact that women are the only demographic group we can be casually disrespectful about in this way. Imagine if they’d written a headline like this about any other demographic group.

Remember how his family eventually gave his father a fake office, because he was suffering from cognitive issues, and they made him believe that he was working all day, when it was all just make believe? Me thinks this is kind of the presidential version of that.

This is such a critical point that a lot don’t get.

And not just that. Sep from the convo abt $, you’re also competing *attention-wise* w anything else that a consumer could be giving their attention to (not just other media that covers your topic). It’s why this is such a tough biz

I remember that one. Whether it was true or not, we definitely lived by it, and as far as I can remember, we never got penalized for it :-)

Agreed, these platforms don’t need to succeed on conventional business terms bc their owners don’t care if they hemorrhage money

Rather, the platforms bring them other benefits, which help their other lines of business, which is what they really care about
