The 14th amendment, among other things, gave citizenship to emancipated slaves. Without it, there’s a whole question of whether or not any person who descends from those folks have citizenship.

My great grandmother was an emancipated slave.

It’s New Year’s Day and NPR is running a story about how influencers on TikTok are grappling with the real possibilities of a ban. With about 80% of influencers being women, it’s kind of a big deal to micro business economies. It is ALSO a great reminder that … (1/2)

An author once told me something that’s stuck with me:

As a micro biz owner, personal issues can become biz issues, and vice versa.

As I develop this reality show concept around my biz, I’m documenting everything I can think of, in case it becomes relevant for the show.

Ways to honor your boundaries and protect your energy:
1. Give yourself the gift of not wanting something for someone else more than they want it for themselves.

2. Match their energy and investment in your relationship (whatever that relationship is). People come and go. Hold on loosely.

Wait wait wait… so the Lions are in first place AND Indiana has a winning football team with a spotless record?

That clinches it. The end times are here.

And just like that, in one, anticlimax moment, my x account is no more.

Something something about fading away.

Goodreads is owned by Jeff Bezos. A better alternative is StoryGraph, a Black woman-owned platform. And before y’all start, you can transfer all your Goodreads data to Storygraph so you literally have no excuse.

And the U.S. military blamed the rapes on black soldiers even if they weren’t guilty, because racism ended after Jim Crow, right? SMDH

The rise of multi-hyphenates is a direct result of people NEEDING to be multiple things in order to survive under capitalism.

Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing people embrace all their facets, but when it’s FORCED upon you as a means of survival?

It’s a “feature”, not a glitch.

Hard, sucky truth:
Sometimes ya gotta create your own safe space, build your own table, and invite people you trust to your party. It may be lonely in the early days, but anything worth doing will have hard parts.

This is good advice for just about every profession…except maybe neurosurgeons and presidents.
The number one advice any & every writing professional can & will give you is this:

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SUCK.

You have spent years reading books, watching movies & TV, developing taste to know good from bad. NO ONE GETS TO READ YOUR WRITING UNTIL YOU LET THEM. Trust your taste & write fearlessly.

I'm seriously considering turning my business into an online reality show for 2025. Like, go behind the scenes and see how I make decisions, the ups and downs, what I'm reading, who I'm working with, and why. The whole 9 yards.
