Ford’s Theatre playbills are tricky things. Even the original printer later made duplicate copies to sell to a public clamoring for a keepsake. One of the Ford brothers swore an affidavit attesting to a playbill being genuine but it was actually a reprint.

That’s a neat piece but, sadly, not an original playbill. After the assassination, there were printers who made and sold fraudulent playbills. This is an example of one made by L. Brown. Compare the details to a real playbill printed by H. Polkinhorn (the printer used by Ford’s Theatre).

Case in point, Happy National Cat Day:

In 1901, writer & Lincoln collector Osborn Oldroyd walked the escape route of John Wilkes Booth. During his visit behind Ford’s Theatre, he was greeted by some alley cats. Don’t wear down your paws like Oldroyd did. Consider taking a guided Lincoln Assassination Tour by bus instead. #NationalCatDay

Not to worry. Before too long, you’ll be able to connect any other historical event back to the assassination. Then you’ll see how even more insufferable you can be to “normal” people who apparently don’t play six degrees of assassination in their mind all the time.
