Spring, aflame

This is long overdue thanks to some logistical challenges, and I wish my photography and staging did it better justice, but now I have my own little slice of Rivendell hanging on my wall thanks to @sarahecozart.bsky.social! Isn’t it absolutely lovely?

It was over a decade before I watched another, but this is where it all started for me! I remember thinking it was utterly ridiculous, and yet being unable to stop watching.

Even for a winter-lover like me, spring has overwhelming glories to offer.

My deepest apologies to Ukraine. My deepest, heartfelt, devastated apologies to you all. I cannot believe what our nation has become under this wretched man. May God forgive us, and may He come to the aid of the people of Ukraine. Gracious Lord, have mercy.

There’s an actor who is creating an almost scene-by-scene lip sync recreation of the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice, and it’s sheer delight for anyone who’s loved and rewatched the original. (He’s not quite finished yet.)

In case your day needed some joy and silliness! youtube.com/playlist?lis...

I’ve loved the music of Chess (the musical) for many years now. But never did I expect to understand the lyrics of its song “Anthem” (sung by a Russian character contemplating defection to the West during the Cold War) quite so personally. youtu.be/61DiWi00d2w?...

There is a lot going on right now, much of it very bad, but I’m feeling more national shame about that UN vote than I’ve felt about anything in a long time.

We’ve always prided ourselves on being (very flawed and worthy of criticism) “good guys”. It’s time we started acting like it.

Please, God, guard my heart from hatred masquerading as righteous anger.

Help me to know how to react like You do to injustice -- with anger that does not become contempt, bitterness, vindictiveness, or enmity. Because my human anger does not produce the justice that You desire.

Lately I keep finding myself humming “Anthem” from Chess: The Musical to myself.

I’m sure there’s no reason for it.

Trying really hard over here not to slip into learned helplessness when my (meager) efforts to preserve our republic seem so futile.

I guess I need to focus on doing the right thing because it’s right, not because it’s immediately effective. But it’s hard.

@revchrisdavis.bsky.social I bought “Bright Hope for Tomorrow” a while back and hadn’t yet finished it, but I opened it again yesterday when I badly wanted a dose of eschatological hope - and Chapter 4 was next. It was just what I needed. Thank you.

Is it coincidence that I’ve burned through all available episodes of both Severance and Slow Horses (featuring some of the most miserable workplaces imaginable) in the same month when my job has become incredibly stressful and frustrating due to multiple deadlines?

…probably not.

I don’t love everything Bujold’s ever done, especially later in her career (including the last few Vorkosigan works) - but I would put much of the Vorkosigan saga and also The Curse of Chalion on my desert island bookshelf.

TCoC also has one of the best depictions of (fictional) faith I’ve seen.
I don’t think she’s been forgotten, but all the fiction of Lois McMaster Bujold, especially the Vorkosigan saga—all of it should be way, way more famous, in my opinion. She’s one of my favorite novelists, full stop. I would die of delight if smart creative folks made a good Vorkosigan TV series.
There are many writers of quality SFF - especially women - who never became celebrities and whose work imo far outstrips Gaiman's. And, yes, many - especially women - have been forgotten.
