I’ve felt so helpless and ineffectual lately. Thank you for letting me know - you too have been a blessing tonight. (And I am with you on the social media purge, at least on other platforms - I can’t take it.)

The ripples of damage travel so far.

That lack of feeling safe and understood in your own community… it takes such a heavy, heavy toll. It’s always a relief to me to go online and be reminded that I’m not the only one who thinks a certain way - but it’s never quite the same as local community.

This is the most helpful thing I’ve read to date about this societal moment. Thank you for sharing it.

I found this article interesting and helpful, and it seems to speak to what you’re trying to untangle.

It’s all so exhausting. I’m sorry you’re having to bear that load. wildernessdispatch.com/2025/09/15/w...
We are remembering two different Charlie Kirks
The way we see Charlie Kirk, his life and death, and indeed, nearly everything, is determined less by the facts than by our personal paradigms. Less by the truth than by our algorithms. This past w…

I’m so sorry you’re experiencing that - but reading your description helped me recognize something in my own difficulties today. Thank you.

Definitely have something on hand for chafing, including for feet - they make it in deodorant-like sticks that can easily go in a bag. Also (and this is admittedly counter-intuitive), having a lightweight wrap/pashmina on hand can help provide instant relief from both sun and bugs if needed.

Yes! The specific ones I have include really detailed, useful footnotes about historical and literary context. There a lot a lot of references that would have gone right over my head without the help of the Norton’s footnotes.

What a steal!

I don’t have the anthologies, but I love my Norton’s editions of Anna Karenina, Jane Eyre, and Bleak House’

Bless you, no, they really don’t!

Those plates are so pretty! Blue and white china is my favorite.

It also meant that when I checked out the Broadway soundtrack recording from the library, my innocent ears were in no way prepared for “Lovely Ladies”. The abridged version had been carefully sanitized to remove any hint of such things. I thought for sure that I’d be grounded if Mom found out.

“Why is that man being mean to Fantine, whom we just met and know nothing about, and putting snow down her back? Why is she being arrested for just walking down the street?”

All I know is that when I read Les Mis for the first time in middle school, I was very confused. Thankfully I loved it enough to reread it the next year - and that’s when I discovered that Round 1 had been abridged. Things made a lot more sense once Fantine had a backstory, for example.

Love it! Smocking levels up the coolness and comfort factor, too.

Same over here, and seriously.

LOL, yes, the Maine couture!

I can understand the urge to manifest the cooler weather through whatever means necessary - except that then the hot weather seems to stick around even longer, out of spite.

It always seems like desperate autumn cosplay to me! 😂 I noticed the same thing in south Florida - if the temperature dropped below 75°, everyone started wearing their wool and leather clothes, and meanwhile I was resentfully sweating while Christmas shopping, which should be illegal.

Yes to stretchy comfy dresses for cooler weather! I have one long-sleeve dress that fits the bill (in magenta, ha). I also have some of my light floaty midi summer dresses in deep jewel tones (which suit me better than “summer” colors) - and they work great in fall.

I refuse to act like I shouldn’t dress in summer clothes if the thermometer reading looks like THAT. I don’t care if it’s January!
May 21, 2025 at 1:01 AM
My favorite part of summer is that it’s soft lightweight dress season! Just cool stretchy comfort that magically looks cuter than all my other clothes usually do.

Also, that color is stunning!

This is so clever and just lovely! Tucking away this idea for myself.
