i miss you so much

Well, I could make a... fairly reasonable guess as to why Monogatari appeals to more people, but I would also like to imagine that there's more to it than just fanservice. Perhaps a better story or characters await me, or higher production values, or maybe neither and it's just annoyingly horny!

Well, Monogatari is very often compared to a series that I *do* kinda enjoy as a guilty pleasure: the Aobuta series. Comparisons are so abundant that Aobuta is often called "the poor man's Monogatari"

So for a series I enjoy to be labeled an inferior knock off, what makes Monogatari so much better?

The second (and more sketchy) anime I will start is Bakemonogatari, the first in the Monogatari series.

I swore to myself years ago I would never watch this for a lot of reasons! So many that I would go way over the character limit. I'm sure a lot of you know exactly what I'm talking about, so why?

I have no real expectations for it other than I'll probably like it? I know Aisaka is a fairly famous example of a tsundere but that's about it. It being late 2000s J.C. Staff also means it probably is fairly well animated? Idk. Nothing in particular screams danger to me so it should go alright.

The first series I will start is Toradora!
This is an anime I've actually tried to sit down and watch three times before, but could never get past a few episodes. Why? Dunno! I don't think it's boring or uninteresting or anything, but I could never stick with it, but this time for sure! (Right?)

With newfound motivation to place first in the Meiko Cup, Inori trains to peform a Salchow spin (something she's wanted to do ever since she watched Hikaru do one) but has difficulty doing it consistently. With a tip from Tsukasa, she almost effortlessly masters a flying sit spin instead!

In Episode 3, we meet Miketa, a catty (quite literally) junior of Inori's who initially befriends her until eventually turning on Inori once she realizes she's too in tune with what her coaches want, but Tsukasa isn't demanding of Inori like Miketa's coach (Mario) is of her.

This friendship setup is really interesting to me and frankly is a lot better than another snotty rival that a lot of sports shows tend to implement as the main rival. I already think the main flaw of this series is how comically critical and evil the parents are, so Hikaru being different is nice.
May 6, 2025 at 9:13 PM
Hikaru is one of the shining stars of the local skaters, and unlike all of the adults who constantly belittle Inori's skating ability, Hikaru actively encourages her to get better, but Inori is self-conscious since Hikaru is so much more skilled despite being around the same age.
May 6, 2025 at 9:13 PM
Last but not least, we watched Episodes 2 and 3 of Medalist. Inori gets her very first skating badge! She also meets a few other skaters, with her main rival Hikaru being the friendliest! I was honestly surprised since the OP sequence kinda plays her up to be catty like the rest of the skaters.

Since Morihito is an ogre and Kanshi is a tengu, there's some tension between the two that Nico tries to alleviate with her magic that leads to some pretty amusing situations (yaoi moment!), but ultimately they work together to save her later in the episode and allows him to move in with him!
May 6, 2025 at 9:13 PM
Next up is Witch Watch where we get a proper introduction to the tengu boyfailure himself Kanshi! He's so stupid and silly I love him. Everyone in this series is kinda stupid and silly in their own ways so he fits right in.

Back at the palace, Jinshi and co are freaking out about Maomao, and one of the concubines will be giving birth any day now. In her place, her adoptive father is there to fill in for the palace's problem solver while they try to decipher the clues she left behind.

Like father, like daughter!

Apothecary Diaries continues to turn up the heat. Maomao and her friend Shisui have been kidnapped and taken to a mysterious village. A very big twist in this episode is revealed as well!

I'll say it again: if you're not watching this series already, you're doing yourself a big disservice.

And lastly, we started Medalist last night. We only got through one episode due to timing issues, but the first episode was really good as well. I felt the pacing and tone changes were a bit too much at times, but when it got into the emotional monologues, it really made me feel something.

Next episode to talk about is Witch Watch! This is a personal favorite manga of mine and the anime so far has been excellent! This week's episode was pretty fun as well and the funny boyfailure himself Kanshi has joined the cast now! He'll make a good goofy pair with Nico (Kan-Nico Channel time!)

This week's episode of The Apothecary Diaries was really good. For a while it didn't seem like they were going to continue with the conspiracy they teased in the first season, but this episode confirmed they were. Super good twist. I can't wait for next week!

If you're reading this, watch this show

Today's Ninkoro episode was pretty good yet again.
Objective good advice for viewers today as well!

LycoReco shorts have been good so far! Very short episodes but I love seeing little vignettes of Chisato and co.'s shenanigans in Cafe LycoReco after the events of the main anime. If you liked the slice of life aspect of the anime, you'll love these.

Robber has no idea what's coming :P

if you are not watching the apothecary diaries please watch the apothecary diaries

most underrated anime of the season imo is a ninja and an assassin under one roof, which is very similar in premise and comedy to kill me baby if you've ever seen that, except with much better animation and some yuri undertones

meganekko voiced by kana hanazawa = massive lily bait btw
