When facing an epidemic, decision-makers have to agree on a public health strategy. But what does the public want?

To put it very briefly: Strategies should neither be too lax nor too strict, but it also depends on when and who you ask.

Interesting paper and helpful thread. Bottom line: publicly supported independent media and reducing uncertainty lead to positive cycles; lower quality media and perpetuating uncertainty lead to downward spirals in this Austrian study.
13/ 🔍 Key takeaway: Belief change isn’t random.
It’s shaped by predispositions, threat appraisals, & media environment.
High-quality media can create virtuous circles; low-quality media (and particularly those that deliberately gave contrarians a stage) can lock people into vicious circles.

Thursday music thought: I feel like that the songs 'Night shift' by Lucy Dacus and 'Silver Springs' by Fleetwood Mac are sisters.

Very happy that our paper (w/ @dziblatt.bsky.social & E Dinas) has been accepted @bjpols.bsky.social .

We've seen the center right increasingly adopt far-right rhetoric.

Our experiment in 🇩🇪 finds that this erodes anti-prejudice norms *more* than when the far-right employs similar rhetoric.

I wonder whether there is a name for the following phenomenon: One automates a task, but the automation process itself costs more time and/or resources than doing the task manually for the foreseeable future would have. Any pointers?

Day 2 of #MONID2024 is off with a really insightful keynote by Niel Hens talking about the interplay between data and mathematical modeling during the COVID-19 epidemic. One key takeaway for me is the importance of good #sciencecommunication for modeling.

Wondering today about songs for autumn 🍂 - that is both with autumn as a topic or with a general autumnal vibe. There are songs I distinctly associate with summer or winter, but autumn and spring are a different story. Anyone who wants to share what they listen to in autumn?
