Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

I wrote an open letter to @columbiaalumni.bsky.social to demand pro-democracy, pro-free speech leadership from the university against the Trump admin's rising authoritarianism. 85 signatures in less than 24 hours! Columbia alum can still sign here: forms.gle/HTC9UTn4KfmJ...

A thing I wish I could teach people is that the vast majority of very rich people are deeply stupid. They did not get where they are because of ingenuity or talent. They got there because of compound interest on hereditary wealth and being tax cheats.

I've spent the past year talking to James Murdoch about his father's "twisted" behavior, the mind games at the family-counseling retreat, how Fox News really works, and the war over his family's media empire. My cover story for The Atlantic's April edition: theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

Did Musk’s alleged effort to access the government’s payment systems have Trump’s blessing? Or was he going rogue? Either scenario is bad, but one’s a little worse.

I don’t think that’s very clear at all. Trump and his Nazi billionaire friend are trying to destroy government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Anyone still on their side doesn’t want to work with you ever again. And the people who are on your side want you to stand in their way.

1. The conventional explanation for food deserts—that these places are too poor or too rural to generate enough spending on groceries, or too Black to overcome racist corporate redlining — fail to grapple with a key fact: food deserts didn’t used to exist. My new piece in The Atlantic.

Walked out to a clean kitchen this morning and gasped “you cleaned?!!!???” I had never loved my partner more. He replied, “wow you really were hammered last night.” Turns out I cleaned the kitchen. Drunk. I am an amazing woman.
