Dear Ms. MacPhee & Columbia Alumni Association, We are a group of Columbia alumni writing in response to the Trump administration’s recent actions to pause and/or terminate federal funding and Interim President Armstrong’s response, as well as the detainment of Mahmoud Kahlil and the present campus climate. We attended Columbia during the 2010s, come from a wide array of backgrounds, and are pursuing meaningful careers across the country. We are proud of our Columbia education, how it has shaped our thinking and work, and that Columbia allowed us to meet each other. Today, however, we are deeply concerned that our university appears to be complying with the Trump administration’s unconstitutional demands, restricting freedom of speech on campus, and enabling the targeting and/or arrest of its students. Columbia’s response to this encroaching authoritarianism is a grave threat to the university’s legacy and future. This is not a matter of political persuasion or restricted to protest surrounding Israel/Palestine. There is widespread condemnation of the federal government’s encroachment on university life across ideological lines. To quote Brett Max Kaufman of the ACLU, “This is a clear attempt by President Trump to make an example out of Mr. Khalil and silence dissent across the country. No matter what your views are on Israel & Palestine, we should all be terrified of a government incarcerating its residents for their political opinions.”
