This weekend, I've added a new feature on CERCA:
Manual Reference Entry. If it cannot read your PDF, you can now paste the reference list directly and proceed with the analysis. It's available for download on SourceForge now.

Unfortunately, this is no longer an isolated issue. Last week, reports indicated that NeurIPS, one of the world’s leading AI conferences, accepted papers containing 100+ AI-hallucinated citations. This problem is growing rapidly as generative tools become widespread in academic writing.

The code is still available on Github. github.com/lidianycs/ce...
Remembering that you still need to download #JavaFX (I recommend Azul Zulu) to run the tool.

But you don't need "AI" to detect AI-hallucinated citations, you can use tools like CERCA, it's open and free:

as an aside, you don't need "ai" to detect ai, you can use tools like this.

it does use some probabilistic parsing to extract the citation strings, but it's creating context you can use to evaluate citations rather than pretending to have an authoritative answer

They're selling a paid platform, but you didn't need AI to check that. I've created a tool to help reviewers spot this problem easily. It's open and free:

Thanks for sharing it Anthony. I saw an ad today for an AI subscription platform that promises to check the references costing €14 EUR/month for start.

CERCA doesn't use AI and the files are parsed locally, you don't need to upload the papers. The code is also openly shared on github.
