I developed CERCA, an open-source tool designed to help reviewers and researchers identify hallucinated or inconsistent references in academic manuscripts. I started this small project after discovering a hallucinated reference citing my own work.

According to a report from GPTZero, hundreds of AI-hallucinated citations slipped through reviews. The problem is spreading. Reviewers don't have the support or time to verify each reference. Companies are popping up, selling subscription tools and platforms using AI to tackle an AI problem.

as an aside, you don't need "ai" to detect ai, you can use tools like this.

it does use some probabilistic parsing to extract the citation strings, but it's creating context you can use to evaluate citations rather than pretending to have an authoritative answer
