The first AI "over my dead body" volleyed at ZLuC. AI is not compatible with zine library values. Do we need to add a "Fuck AI" section to the Zine Librarians Code of Ethics?

Talking to a faculty member in IT, and my supervisor. Do they not know everything is just cloud based now? They talk about server space like we have big machines whirring in a basement still.

Has anyone seen research on gendered differences related to AI use? e.g. enthusiasm, skepticism, environmental or ethical concerns, etc? Some folks must have done this work. Thanks!

I talked to librarians, authors who have had their books banned, and groups that support them for this article. The glee with which schools, libraries, governments, and companies are replacing human workers and nuance with AI would not be possible w/o the successful war on schools and libraries

The long-running ideological war on libraries, education, and government workers is not separate from AI boosterism. It is the same ideological war on human knowledge and expertise. In some cases AI is being used to directly supercharge this effort:

idk if it's a rate limiting thing but it's funny how internet archive is just like "ok we're done fixing metadata now" for a while if you have to go back and change something on a handful of items. And you just gotta leave it for later.

Uploading the student newspaper archives from the 60s onward to the Internet Archive today. Pretty excited to have them in a much better format than our old vendor solution.

I keep banging the drum that genAI doesn't save time but creates it. Even if you personally save a couple minutes, that time gets kicked down the road and compounded, sometimes back to you but often to someone else who now has to do their job *and* deal with yours.
Cheating with an LLM is the easiest thing in the world for a student to do, but it creates a massive, laborious headache for a prof, if you intend to take it seriously. There’s meetings, emails, discussions, moral dilemmas. It’s just incredibly burdensome, on top of everything else right now.
I had 9 meetings about students using Chat GPT/LLMs on their papers today.
